Caro-Kann, Advance Variation, Short Variation
I'm currently learning the Caro-Kann thanks to a great book (Grandmaster Repertoire - The Caro-Kann, from Lars Schandorff), but I have a problem with the Short Variation of the Advance Var...

Not playing ...c5 in the Classical Caro
In the classical caro, Black aims to plays ..c5.
Sometimes it is not appropriate, and I can think of two scenarios why: (i) if Black has played Bg4xNf3 then ...c5 liberates the position for Whit...

...Na6 in the Caro Kann
Is ...Na6 in the Caro Kann considered in any of the SOS books?
If not it would seem to qualify, as 2...Na6 has been played several times by Serbian GM Markovic, including this year, and a few tim...

Classical Caro Kann 11.Bf4 - Search for New Ideas
[pgn][Event "Open A"]
[Site "Vladimir RUS"]
[White "Kokarev, Dm"]
[Black "Molchanova, T."]
I had wondered about 17.Bc1 and came across the above game. Some ideas behind 17.Bc1 - Keeps options open, gets the bishop off the d-file, the bishop continues to eye h6, White asks Black what his plan is. Basically White cleans up his house before starting kingside action. Obviously, though, White is using up a lot of time with Kb1, Bc1 moves.
Looking at this with a computer, it's funny that after 17...b5 18.c5 it gives Black a half

Mad Variation in Advance
There have been a few recent examples of a completely mad system in the 3 e5 , 4 h4 Caro.
One is published by Malcolm Pein in the Telegraph.

Poll: Nomenclature issue
Apologies for what might be considered an irrelevant question, but I was curious as to people's opinions.
How would you classify the sequence 1. e4 c6 ; 2. d4 d5 ; 3. Ktc3/Ktd2 g6 ?

A "new" variation against the Short system.
I have started to use a "new" setup against the Short system. It may look really silly but I have "got away" with it so far when I have played it. Black loses a tempo in this set up but I have my doub...

B12: Is this gambit in the Fantasy Variation new?
Here in a transposition to the Fantasy Variation careless move order gives White a good game i.e. 1.e4 e6 2.c4 c6?! (d5) 3.d4 d5 4.f3! & this gambit seems to give White a good game e.g. 4...dxe4 5.Nc3...

Today I had a quick look at this line of the Caro-Kann (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3/Nd2 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Nxf6 exf6) and think this line could be an interesting surprise variation. However when searching fo...
