In Davies book, following Game 34, Honfi - Varga, Budapest, 1995 after 9. b3 e5; 10 dxe5, dxe5; 11. Qxd8, Rxd8; 12. c5, N6d7; 13. Bc4, Nc6; 14. Nf3, h6; (in the notes on page 89, col 2) Davies adds that Emms suggested 15. 0-0. Can anyone identify where Davies recommended this move, and whereabouts I can find any analysis on it? Thanks!

Oh wonderful, someone else remembers the good ol´ days when polgarfan Leonid (where has he gone?) enriched the web !

9...a5 has always been my choice in blitz games (with a ~90% score), but I´ve never been challenged by the voronezh in tounament games. Probably I´d played the more solid 9...e5, as White should be able to gain a real "+=" against  9...a5 !?

Alexander Naumann 2518 v. Rafael Waganjan 2623 , German Bundesliga 2003/04, 02.11.2003
9.b3 a5!? 10.Be2 a4 11.Nf3 axb3 12.axb3 Bg4 13.h3 Bxf3 14.Bxf3 Nc6 15.0-0 Nd7 16.Re1 Re8 17.Nb5 Ra2 18.Nc3 Ra3 19.Nb5 Ra2 20.Nc3 draw

When Waganjan plays 9...a5, it should be playable. But when I look at the position after 15.0-0 I would call this += .

The Voronezh variation:

1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.exd6 cxd6 6.Nc3 g6 7.Be3 Bg7 8.Rc1 0-0 9.b3!?

... in the Alekhine has given black a lot of headake...
As mentioned in this forum earlier, 9-,e5 is the ECO "medicine" against it. But to me it seams as it is white who has all the fun. The black posistion is not easy to play.

I was wondering if anyone have any experience with
9-, a5!?

The first time I saw this idea was in some analysis at "Leonids Chess Megapage".
Blacks idea is to play -,a4 next and weaken the white queenside. Some variations:
i) 10.Be2 a4!? 11.c5?! dxc5 12.dxc5 axb3! 13. cxb6 b2...
ii) 10. a3 a4!? 11. b4 d5 12.c5 Nc4...
iii) also 10.Nf3 is followed by a4!?....

Has this move been analysed seriously!?
