Thanks. Just playing some thematic games and found the opening to my surprise very fascinating. There are a lot of ideas to assess.

The new book Gambit Killer by Ivan Salgaldo has a short chapter on this.  He believes White can keep a slight edge.

Old topic but newest one. So:

Are there any recent sources for studying the Winawer Gambit?

My feeling is that the Kasparov-Nikolic approach is overrated for White. It doesn't look probable that the kingside attack can be prosecuted so quickly with accurate play. Indeed Nikolic has subsequently improved on that game. and even played that line again recently: see Van der Strict-P. Nikolic Antalya 2004.

Sakaev/Semkov in their Anti-Meran book recommends 6. Nd2, with the idea of Ngf3/g3 etc. This is a more positional approach, and may lead to a poor Albin countergambit for Black after 6... Qxe5 7. Ngf3 Qd6 8. g3.

I am mostly just "bumping" this thread because I also am interested in the answer to this question.  I sometimes play the move-order with 3.Nc3, and I have faced this gambit in some blitz games online but never in a serious game.

The best sources I have on the Winawer Gambit are Jeremy Silman's and John Donaldson's "Gambits in the Slav" (published in 1994 and therefore somewhat dated, but with its 48 pages on the Winawer the most comprehensive general coverage of the gambit I have seen) and Burgess's coverage in "The Slav" (published in 2001, with about 7.5 pages of double-column coverage).

My impression is that the most critical line is still 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e5 4.dxe5 d4 5.Ne4 Qa5+ 6.Bd2 Qxe5 7.Ng3 Nf6 8.Nf3 Qd6 9.Qc2 Be7 10.0-0-0 0-0 11.e3 dxe3 12.fxe3, as introduced in Kasparov-P. Nikolic, Manila OL 1992, but there seem to be a number of suggested improvements for Black on that game which are either untested or have only been tried in a few games.

Does anybody know of a more recent source for material on this line?
