I guess most of the people nowdays use the adblock extension so ads become less efficient.

Spam, certainly.
Mod - delete. It's fine to do so - there's no Rachelle discrimination.

It doesn't matter whether the platform is youtube or another site. If it is advertising, you need GM Tony Kosten's permission first.

Links to your chess products in your byline will need to be removed unless you get Tony's permission.

Youtube links are allowed in moderation, but links to self-produced chess content is crossing the line without Tony's permission.

What about links to youtube videos and such since that is not really a competing chess website.

Hello Tony,

I'm glad to find this thread!

I've just sent you a PM concering potential partnership between our team and this forum of chess enthusiasts. We're working on a cross-platform portal for playing chess with friends online. That's why I decided to try to reach you out, because I tend to think that our project might be of interest for you.  Roll Eyes

Hey Tony,

I just programmed an Android App that lets users train memorizing chess positions (and also to get to know the board itself). It is free and supports leaderbords as well as unlocking achievements and comes with 200+ levels. Would it be ok to post it in a thread here?

Kind regards
Michael

I want to call the attention of the other moderators to several recent posts by one charlesgalofre. I welcome his participation here but the commercial signature block, promoting another website, has to go. I am sure he was unaware of our norm when he posted. However I deleted his one post within my ambit, and I'll keep deleting until the signature block changes or Tony says otherwise.

Indeed. Deleted KID posts and sent PM accordingly.

Yes, seams to be pure sales promotion and should be treated as spam.

Dink,

While the application sounds wonderful, I am not terribly fond of providing the link here.  Maybe you could just give the title, and let the Publicans find the link themselves?

I wouldn't want to go testing every link that people may think useful.

Thanks for asking first!

Hi,
Can I link to a (free) product that allows one to download multiple files simultaneously? I just downloaded a year's worth of TWICs in less than a minute (including setting up the batch), and I know this would be of interest to a number of people, as this topic has cropped up from time to time.

Hi Tony,

Some of my posts include links to qualitychess. All have been topically related.

fyi, I hadn't realized 'Advertisements for other sites/forums' meant 'Policy for linking to other sites/forums'

aside: the .htaccess file made a noticeable improvement.

Hello GM Kosten,

Next to being an enthusiast chessplayer I'm a graphic designer and I have designed a series of chess T-shirts. Is it okay for you that I post a link to my site?

Please your opinion!

Kind regards,

They already do this! There is a lot of chesspublishing.com mentioned in recent Yearbooks - perhaps I should write a letter to NIC and ask them not to place some hidden advertisment within their superb books  Wink

If you want to get mentioned somewhere you have to mention your business partners (yes! partners not opponents - cause most chess people are really keen on buying everthing! Grin) as well. If you censor them they will censor you and you end up as a lonely island.

Anyway I have two interests here:
1) Learn and discuss about chess
2) Feel welcome and connected in a free world

A little advertisement for this article

http://www.chesscafe.com/fromarchive/fromarchive.htm

on another site probably will not hurt. Good, GM Kosten, you did not make that joke. Even better you improve it in the last line of your article!

Personally I think that you should restrict posting on the forum to members.

furthermore why should non members be able to read the forum.

It has been restricted to members-only posting for a long time now, and I think that this clearly works. I don't know about stopping non-members from reading the posts, what would be the advantages of this?

This is not the only chess forum which runs into spammers and cyber trolls. Personally I think that you should restrict posting on the forum to members.

furthermore why should non members be able to read the forum.

Another webmaster, Michael Goeller, manages to post with some frequency without ever mentioning his website, so why not you?
Btw, I clearly prefer chesspub. If you want to know why I will send you a PM.

Yes, if I think you are advertising your site I will probably delete it, sorry! Already I don't really see why it is necessary to say you're Michel the "..."! Angry
Almost every other member manages to discuss theory without gratuitously referring to their own sites, it is easy enough to advertise on Google, etc! Shocked

Hi!

It's, I believe,  my fifth message on this fine forum...

I am mainly interested  by Chess, Chess Theory, Chess Analysis, Chess Practice, Chess & Art and finally Chess & Philosophy... All what I know, all what I am able to express today is on my website and I would be very please if I was allowed to express such ideas with you and other members of the CHESS PUBLISHING Community... Is it possible without risking to see my message deleted?

Greetings,

Frendo
I understand - but there is one major difference.

You, and many others here, have a history of contributing to the site in terms of quantity and quality of your posts.

A spam-bot does not.

The fact that an off-site url is included in a post by a respected member would mitigate against the need for holding up the post. Even so, the "hold up" shouldn't be that noticeably longer than normal when posting - the automated cross-check shouldn't take too long.

However, this really only applies to those who have no history on the site.

It has been mentioned that only when someone has made a minimum number of posts that they're allowed greater freedoms on the site...

I know of at least one site where, not only do you have to post at least 60 posts - but that the mere quantity is not sufficient to gain these extra freedoms. Quality of posting is also assessed and if deemed below par, the poster will have to continue contributing until the top staff grant the extra privileges.

Certainly, using a Captcha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) will help prevent spam-bots signing-up - this in conjunction with account validation (one week to validate, else the account is erased) would defeat most bots.

From what I've read, YaBB uses Perl (MyPerl?) - the above linked article itself includes a link to a Perl script to incorporate a Captcha.

Even with this strategy, the more detemined spammers may still begin to get past this precaution.

Kindest regards,

James

Sounds reasonable but I and many others often mention other useful free chess related (and other useful sites) sites (such as book reviews, "The Chess Mind", etc...) and I'd hate to see those posts held up.

Tony, although I'm unfamiliar with YaBB, there are a number of ways to help prevent spam.

Consider...

1) Most spammers are "one-hit posters" - single post, new IP address;
2) Their "post" normally includes a off-site link;
3) Major spammers and other abusers are on "known-spammer" list(s).

Given the above, a simple anti-spam strategy would be:

1) Any poster who includes a link to an off-site domain - NOT "www.chesspublishing.com" - would alert yourself and all site mods/admins;
2) New posters should have their IP address/domain immediately checked against known-spammer and other abuser lists - especially if their post includes a link as in 1);

In fact, in 1) above, the post could be held up (not posted) until the included link has been cross-checked against known spammer/malware/etc lists.

If it proves to be spam, etc, then it could be dumped without it ever appearing on the forum and you could ban the attempted poster (IP/email).  Wink

Kindest regards,

James

No cause for worries!  Cox, Palliser & Semkov are still around & posting. Cheesy

Actually I think the discussion at the moment is just about registering to the forum (with a valid email address) as opposed to just being able to post on the forum (and not about requiring subscription), or did I misunderstand that?

It certainly would be a shame if measures were necessary that drove book authors like Palliser, Cox, Semkov, Dearing and any others away, but I'm sure that just having to register would not be too bad.

I can't help feeling that guest authors will be very happy to register if they think they might get a few more sales - I certainly would!  Smiley

I can sure understand the problem, but it would be a shame to lose the interaction with book authors who enter as guests Undecided

What's the point of guests anyway?

Why should there be an open door policy where guests come in and freely feed off the scraps which fall from the Masters' tables?

I feel that guests coming on with most likely no intention of ever paying a subscription yet thinking they have carte blanche with respect to participating in discussions or siphoning off ideas is totally unacceptable.

Why should people be able to come on anonymously and then proceed to post "free" "advertisements" for other rival or non chess sites?

I see some people complaining that certain sections of the site proper are late yet Tony Kosten is expected to waste his time cleaning up this sh**.

What irony!

I have always defended guest posting. But, the nuisance has become a bit too much. It’s not about band width. Bingo, casino and porno sites seem to have taken a special liking for this forum. I wouldn’t want to just ignore it. My 11 year old son is a frequent visitor here. It may be dangerous. Unless the first post approval becomes mandatory, (Like Mig’s site) the only other option left is to make registration compulsory. I don’t like it one bit. But, I guess, there is no other option left.

Just a query:

As a per cent of usable space, how much do these adverts really take up?  In other words, does Chesspub really have to go to such draconian measures as to limit the members who can post here?

No, just the stuff where someone comes onto the Forum with the express purpose of making some free adverts.

GM Kosten,

I once referred a poster to Zsuza Polgar's blog since he was looking for a place where he coluld get some chess puzzles. Would that also be considered  advertising?

In the Jänisch-Schliemann thread (Open Section) you will find something really worth deleting. If that is not an advertisement, than what is?

Yes, really I was a bit concerned at the way some people seem to think that other Forums are not for sensible discussion, but places to get free publicity. I hadn't realised there was such a major problem with Dutch newspapers, but from now on I will be keeping a close watch on them! Grin

Here I go. In my last post in the WCh football thread I have given a link to a Dutch newspaper. It is about having too many Ajax players in the Orange team. May I? If not, go ahead and delete the post. I would be grateful for an explanation.
