5...f5!? is a very interesting reply. I have played many games and obtained good results.

Main moves for white (5. 0-0, 5. Nc3) defend e4 treatening take the e5 pawn (also 5.d4, solving the tension too early)  thus forcing black to defend it and more or less commiting himself.  Looking things from this point of view 5. h3 cannot be very challenging, so many moves probably will do well for black. I also like 5...c5 followed by Bd6-Ne7-c6 (g6). The position would resemble and improved version for black of the delayed exchange variation where an early h3 is not the most useful move and white does not play d4...

I would strongly consider a setup with Be6, Qd7, Bd6 and Ne7 in some order, eventually castling queenside. 5.h3 might become a serious weakness indeed.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I guess the most prinicpled reply from black, and probably best, is 5..c5. It doesn't seem to me that white has any advantage in, for example, 5...c5 6.0-0 f6 7.d3 Be6 8.Be3 b6 9.Nd2, and it seems equal.

If I were Black I would strongly consider 5...Ne7, which is a decent move even after 5.0-0.  Black eventually plays ...Ng6 and White may come to regret that little weakness in his kingside.

I agree nothing really to fear from black after bg4.  you just need to book up a little bit even Nbd2 is a good move alongside Be3

Hello,

the Question is why to avoid 5.00-Bg4 ? Its a good line for White with a lot of chances in the Endgame. 6.h3-h5 7. d3-Qf6
8.Be3(!?) with nice Ideas. Take a look in the new book from Kindermann about the exchange Spanish

Regards
