So What's the latest word on this the so called Tarzan Attack, and has Black's most effective counter been found.

Kogan;s coverage in the SOS is pure. Just an example: after 5..Ne4 6.Nxe4 dxe4 7.Ne5 Be6! Kogan say's that 8.O-O-O deserves attention but in fact it just loses a pawn to Bxa2! Fritz takes a little time but at the end realises that 9.b3 a5! is desive for black! Then after 8.e3 Nd7 9.Nc4 he gives a beeter move for white than Yusupov's 9..O-O 10.Be2 when Kasparov played Bxc4! and e5! but he doesn't consider this exchange a move earlier 9...Bxc4! 10.Bxc4 e5! and black is very comfortable! Also Martin in his new DVD doesn't consider these lines. In fact he doesn't mention the "main line" 9.Nc4! I think that everyone is too lazy to analyse for himself and depends on the computer evaluation only. I try to convince you everytime to analyse with your own eyes first and then compare your analysis with the machine. Sometimes computers seems to stupid then!

I thought Kogan's improvement on the Kasparov game was 9.Nxd7 instead of 9.Nc4.

So, again plaudits to Prie-san for coverage herein. On time too which is increasingly a rarity in these parts. France working hard but the rest of Europe on strike? By jove, bit of a turnaround.
Well done that man.

How do the Tarzan attack and Barry compare? By putting your queen on d2 early, what are the strong points of that, opposed to the Barry move order? Thanks.

I find 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bf4 Bg7 4.Nc3 d5 5.Qd2 Ne4 quite worrying and especially 6.Nxe4 dxe4 7.Ne5 f6.

A friend mentioned an article in SOS#6 on the Tarzan Attack. (I have the book on order.) I have played the traditional 5 e3 Barry Attack, so I became curious to look for Tarzan games. I found the following game:

[Event "8th Dos Hermanas Internet FI32"]
[Site "Internet Chess Club KO"]
[Date "2007.03.23"]
[Round "2"]
[White "Kogan, Artur"]
[Black "Zinchenko, Yaroslav"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "D00"]
[WhiteElo "3092"]
[BlackElo "2790"]
1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Bf4 Bg7 5. Qd2 O-O 6. Bh6 Ne4 7. Nxe4 dxe4 8. Bxg7 Kxg7 9. Ng5 Qd5 10. c4 Qxc4 11. Nxe4 Rd8 12. e3 Qe6 13. Bd3 f5 14. Nc5 Qf6 15. O-O b6 16. Nb3 c5 17. Qe2 cxd4 18. Nxd4 e5 19. Qf3 e4 20. Bxe4 fxe4 21. Qxe4 Rxd4 22. Qxa8 1-0

That game was impressive enough for me to be tempted to test this sub-variation. My opportunity came quickly:

[Event "Denton Frolic #5"]
[Site "Denton TX"]
[Date "2007.08.19"]
[Round "3.1"]
[White "Hayward, Keith"]
[Black "Bazemore, Vincent"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "D00"]
1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Bf4 Bg7 5. Qd2 O-O 6. Bh6 Ne4 7. Nxe4 dxe4 8. Bxg7 Kxg7 9. Ne5 f6 10. Nc4 Be6 11. e3 b5 12. Na5 c6 13. Be2 Qb6 14. O-O Nd7 15. c4 b4 16. Nb3 Rfd8 17. Qc2 f5 18. f3 exf3 19. Bxf3 Rac8 20. Rae1 Bf7 21. e4 e6 22. c5 Qc7 23. Be2 Nf6 24. Bf3 Qd7 25. e5 Nd5 26. Na5 Qc7 27. Nc4 Rb8 28. Nd6 Ne7 29. Qf2 Ng8 30. g3 Be8 31. Be2 Ne7 32. g4 Nd5 33. Bc4 Qe7 34. Kh1 Qg5 35. gxf5 exf5 36. Bxd5 cxd5 37. Rg1 Qh5 38. Nxf5+ Kh8 39. Nd6 Bd7 40. e6 Rf8 41. Qg3 Rf3 42. Qe5+ Qxe5 43. Rxe5 Bc6 44. e7 Rd3 45. Rf1 Kg7 46. e8=Q Bxe8 47. Nxe8+ Kh6 {Time.} 1-0

I forgot 9 Ng5 was the preferred move. Regardless, it seems removing Black's king bishop produces a middlegame that White can be pleased with.

GM Hebden, the hero for the Barry Attack, has in recent years started playing 5 Qd2 over 5 e3. How much and why is not clear to me? I see the two moves as about equal in value. However, the Tarzan Attack should grow in popularity in the years to come with players like Hebden showing us the way.

Good Chess! Keith

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Eric

Any chance of some coverage on 5 qd2 as opposed to 5 e3 ( The Barry attack). You might want to look at Hebden v Lewis , British championship 2007 for a crushing white win !

Regards,

Andrew
