Hello again, I mean that this particular line with 8...h6 is sent to the history. Currently I am defending the Kozul's suicide system as it was called by Yermolinsky in his book Chess Explained: Classical Sicilian.
I am ding fine till now, but who knows... If it stops working then may be the variation with early ...Nxd4 and Qa5 shoukld be picked up again.
I am interested to hear the opinion what grandmasters think about Richter-Rauzer and which lines they recommend for Black and White.

Regards

Sad. In that case, what line do you recommend? Do you mean this whole classical sicilian is sent to the history, or do you just mean the Qa5 variation that I mentioned?

I do not think so. The whole line is sent to the history. There was a very good article in NIC Yearbook by GM Miso Cebalo. The title of the article was - A matter of survival.
I think that Black should try to find a new ways in other variations.

15.Rd4 is a really nice move! How did you come up with it? It seems to defend against most of Black's threats.

The only thing I can come up with is 15...Nd5 16.Re4 Rg8 17.Rd1 Bb4 18.Bc4 Nxc3 19.Bxc3 Bxc3 20.Qxc3 Qxc3 21.bxc3 However, I think White still has an initiative.

I wonder what the new Classical Siclian converts have in mind  Huh How did the latest games in this line (Not just ...Ra7, but the Nxc6 line as a whole) go?

Anyway, what do you have against 11...Bb4?

Instead of 18.Bc4 White wins easily with 18.Rxb4! Qxb4 (18...Rxb4 19.a3 Rb7 20.Ne4+-) 19.Nxd5 cxd5 20.Bxa6+-

Well then, if black cannot survive the endgame, then lets fight it out in the middlegame! Smiley

I play 16...Nxe5 instead 17.Rd8 Ke7 18.Rxc8 g5 19.Bxa6?(I guess you have to find an improvement here) Ra7 20.Bb5 Bg7 21.Rxh8 Bxh8 Suddenly, Black is the one attacking.

I think there is an improvement for White in this line. Instead of 20.Bb5 they should try 20.Nb5!? Nd3 (what else. White threatens Qxe5) 21.cd3 Ra6 22.Rc7 Kf6 and now 23.de4 or 23.Nc3 and White keeps the attack.

Actually, my computer keeps moving between the range of -0.19-0.15. Therefore, I think the position is equal.

Looks really unclear to me. Maybe it is easier for White to play, but I think Black can hold.

Hi again,

in the line with 15...Nd5 16.Rxe4 Rg8 I propose 17.a3 befor playing Rd1 - it may hinder a lot of plans from Black

in the line with 15...Nd7 16.Rhd1 Qxe5 17.Rxd7 Qxg3 18.Rd8+ Ke7 19.hxg3 Bd7 20.Ra8 f5 I go 21.Na4 - White is very active and never in danger of losing - maybe there will be an opposite coloured bishop endgame as worst case

Dear sssthepro,

sorry that I didnt reply - I was very busy at work the last weeks. Should be better Eastern...

I just had a look at chesslive.de some days ago - the line was already played, but I had not time to look at the games.

We keep it going  Wink

Well, I actually have one interesting line to counter this idea. I got it from a Balogh game. After 11.Qe3 Qa5 12.Be2 dxe4 13.Qg3 Ra7!?

This is the interesting idea. It may look primitive at first, but the idea is to swing the rook to the b-file and attack.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6 6.Bg5 e6 7.Qd2 a6 8.O-O-O h6 9.Nxc6 bxc6 10.Bf4 d5 11.Qe3 Qa5 12.Be2 dxe4 13.Qg3 Ra7!? (Balogh, sssthepro) 14.Be5 Rb7

now I suggest 15.Rd4 for White:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

This move has the following ideas:
- pressure on the e4-pawn
- controlling square a4, either rook or knight can move there
- double up rooks on d-file

How may Black continue?

1) 15...Nd7 16.Rhd1 Qxe5 17.Rxd7 Qxg3 18.Rd8+ Ke7 19.hxg3 Bd7 20.Ra8 (a6 is weak, Black is behind in development)

2) 15.. Qb6 (Attacking b2 - but this fails) 16.Na4 Qa5 17.Rhd1 Nd7 18.Bd6

3) 15...c5 16.Ra4 Qb6 17.Nxe4 Nxe4 18.Rxe4 (How does Black complete his development?)

4) 15...Bc5 16.Ra4 Qb6 17.Nxe4 Nxe4 18.Qxg7 (total desaster)

You know what? After thinking about it, I think the position after your ...Nd7 line is not that bad. True, Black's development is not that great, but I don't see what you can do. For example, after Black plays...f5, ...g5 and ...Bg7, maybe people can argue that Black is better. You may have a passed a-pawn, but it is quite easy to stop, while Black can attack the weak kingside pawns. I think it is harder for White to defend them. Also, Black controls the centre. He has much more space to move.
