Hadron.

Not really. As Alapin's ...Bh3 is a strong reply to g2-g3 White tries to revive the Hanstein with play on the Queen's Wing with b2-b4 or Qd1-a4, but I find it unnatural.

Hi all, I know that it is a long time since I posted here. However I have been giving the KG a rest as white.

However as black I reach it as follows-

1. f4 e5 2.e4 (The NeoFrom gambit 1.f4 e5 2. fxe Nc6 is outside the scop of this thread. However it is dealt with in Kaissiber and I like it for black. I have improvements on analysis given in Timothy Taylor's Book on the Bird but it quite hair raising. Also look at the Kaissiber articles.

I accept the KG

1. f4 e5 2. e4 exf

If 3. Bc4 then I play Nc6 like every body else here.

If 3. Nf3 then I will play a line that I was surprised with in correspondence.

3. Nf3 g5 4.h4 g4 5.Ne5 Qe7 regarded as weak. 6.d4 d6 7.Nxg4 Qxe4 8.Qe2 and now I was surprised by Qe7 where It was difficult to prove any advantage for white.

This last peice looks very interesting. I has been a while since I have tried 3...g5 as Black but I do wonder though have there been any improvements in the Philidor and Hanstein Gambits for White?

I'm reminded again of something Short wrote recently, approximately "The biggest fallacy in chess is the quasi-religious belief in the primacy of the opening."

Yes, you're probably right. After the game we looked at 5 Nc3 but we rejected 6 Nge2 for some reason (6...f3, probably) and instead concentrated on 6 Qd3, but couldn't find any way for White to equalise.

I had a recent club-level game as Black in this variation where White indeed went 5.Nc3, I replied 5...Bb4 (as in the game given) and was unable to get any advantage (although, as is usual with the King's Gambit, the game ended up very interesting).

6.Nge2 does indeed look like the most secure response.  If I remember rightly I continued 6...Nxe4 against this, and White got reasonable compensation for a pawn (7.0-0 0-0 8.Nd5 Ba5 9.Bxf4 looks quite good for instance).  Rybka originally suggests 6...g5 but this may be premature after 7.a3 Bxc3+ 8.Nxc3 d6 9.g3.  In view of those lines plus the 6...f3 7.gxf3 d5 played in Om's game, "dynamically equal" seems a fair assessment at move 6.

In the FKG I recommended 5.Nc3 "The Modest Gambit", and as far as I know it's still equal. Here's an example from corr posted a year ago:

That was a very nice game, quite a beating! Congrats on the point Tony, and congrats on the nice analysis Micawber.

It's also nice to see Igor Nataf in action - always one of my favorite players, but it doesn't seem like he plays that much anymore.

Agree, from Kalash and KID perspectives, right with you. A game I went straight for as well!

Yesterday in the Top12 I played Black against a player who sometimes plays the King's Gambit, so I simply looked at micawber's King's Gambit eBook to prepare. The result: a win in 21 moves as Black against a good GM!
Many thanks micawber!! Smiley
