Maybe not hugely theoretically relevant but what happened when I had to face this fairly recently (vs Phil's clubmate as it happens) was:
4 c4 Nc7 5 d5 d6 6 f4 g6 7 Nf3 Bg4 8 Be2 Bg7 9 Ng5 Bf5 10 o-o f6 11 ed ed 12 Nf3 Bxb1 13 RxB f5 etc.

Don't think white can complain about his position there, although blacks is obviously still playable enough too. Don't think he can safely take e5 on move 10.

Can see how it must be much harder to handle in blitz Smiley

I think that 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 c5 4.c4 Nb4 5.dxc5 d6!?, as played by Cabero in two 2006 games, is critical.  However I don't really see Black's compensation after 6.a3 N4c6 7.exd6 exd6 8.cxd6 Bxd6 9.Nf3 and so forth.  Simple chess.

Anyone have any ideas against 1e4 Nf6 2 e5 Nd5 3 d4 c5..... ? Obviously it's possible to c3 sicilian it, but it's the sort of line that you should be able to play for more against.  Every time I try though I seem to end up losing my centre in short order  Sad

Soltis experimented with this in the mid-1970s. Its most fervent contemporary supporter is the 2150 player Pablo Padilla Cabero, whose current score as Black is over 60%. It's certainly tricky and White can easily over-reach; I can vouch for this, having lost more blitz games than I care to think about against one of my 2200 clubmates who likes to play this.

For a dubious line it scores a remarkable 43% out of 80+ games in my database.

4 c4 Nb4 (the choice of Padilla Cabero) is possibly the most critical line, with Black scoring 46%. Then Khalifman proposes 5 dxc5 as best, but then only examines the replies 5...a5 and 5...Qa5.

After 4 c4 Nc7 it worth noting that the young Keres chose the sensible 5 d5 d6 6 exd6 exd6 7 Bd3. whilst Khlaifman gives 5 dxc5.

4.c4 Nb6 5.d5 d6 6.f4 looks quite strong for White.

6...dxe5 7.fxe5 is a well known and very sharp line of the four pawns variation. Some (most?) people consider this better for white but if you don't play the four pawns through the regular sequence, you've just been move-ordered badly.

4.c4 Nb6 5.d5 d6 6.f4 looks quite strong for White. 4.dc5 Qa5 5.Nd2 Qc5 6.Nb3 Qb4 7.c3 Qe4 8.Qe2 Qe2 9.Be2 is also very pleasant for White.
