I'd be curious to see what the correspondence players have to say about this, but I expect the Evans is a very rare guest in correspondence games.

this is a correspondence game of mine in the Evans gambit (I am black), I think black was a tad better at the end, but it's certainly playable for white, although getting winning chances won't be easy, then you have to hope someone plays 7...dxc3

i prefer 7...Nge7 instead of 7...Nf6 with the idea of d5 and I think black does not posses any problems if he knows how to play the position

Thank you for sharing that, kyle!

Volotkin's introduction states pretty clearly what I had always thought: the Evans is a good surprise weapon, but Black should be able to equalise against best play. He considers Bd6 to be anti-positional, and believes that White should be able to get a slight advantage after that slightly inferior move. He does prefer Ba5 too.

Probably the critical variation was seen in Petrosian-Jones:

Nd4 41. Ne2 Nxe2 42. Re8+ 1/2-1/2

I think that with best play, Black can probably equalise in the 13.Ba3 line, but I'll hedge my bets and say that White has a very slight edge.

As it happens, it's one of the free samples.

I wasn't aware of that article. It may explain why the last time a +2500 used Bd6 in my database was... 2009. Is there a link to the article?

I´d be curious, too. I´m looking from the Black perspective at this and as far as I know the Evans is a sound gambit.

Also I vaguely remember reading in another thread there has been a Nic-article which tried to cast doubt on the soundness of 5... Bd6. I like the same idea in the Four Knights where I think it is fully playable but haven´t looked at it against the Evans.

In my view 5... Ba5 is ambitious enough for Black.

Edit: Ooops, Kylemeister has been quicker and much more precise than me.  Wink

5...Bd6 was the subject of a Yearbook article in 2009 by Andrei Volokitin, who thought it should be +=.

All three moves, Ba5, Bd6 and Be7, have been played by GMs. I had always thought that Ba5 was the most accurate move, ever since studying the famous Fischer-Fine game This was game #44 in My Sixty Memorable Games. I remember Fischer being slightly derisive of Be7, but Anand has played it against Kasparov (1995). Ok, he got crushed in a miniature and later played Ba5. But other GMs have played Be7 since.

I still recommend Ba5 to my students, but Bd6 is certainly interesting and counter-intuitive. Blocking off the d-pawn with a B is rarely good, but some GMs have discovered a few clever tricks that make this probably playable. Grischuk beat Jobava playing this, and even Nigel Short couldn't find a way to an advantage against Bd6.

I'd be curious to see what the correspondence players have to say about this, but I expect the Evans is a very rare guest in correspondence games.

Isn't  Bd6 another solid option?

I'm not strong enough to judge which move is best but the few times i played the evans i had the impression that white game is easyer against Be7.

From the white side, I am happier when black plays Be7. It lets more space and more activity, just what I am looking for when playing 4.b4.
For the rest, it will be a matter of taste.
Up to the statistics on chessgames.com, Black scores 40.7% with Ba5 and 41% with Be7. (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=1496708&move=5.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc...)

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Objectively both 5... Ba5 and 5... Be7 are okay.

I'm guessing you mean 4...Bxb4, not 4...Bb5.

Btw, nice cat!  Cool
