Gashimov has tried it a few times. You can transpose into other lines where White tries an early d4, or for that matter into older forms of the Berlin where Black doesn't take on e4.

I'd doubt there's anything wrong with it, except that it reaches positions believed to be equal. So perhaps a good weapon against players with a deep but narrow set of openings to catch them in the transpositions.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.d4 is hardly ever played in master games, but it doesn't score much differently than 4.Re1 or 4.0-0. I've looked at the main lines 4.d4 exd4 5.0-0 or 5.e5, and 4.d4 Nxd4, and it looks interesting. Is there some antidote for Black here that has made White players stay with 4.0-0?
