Summer baseball in New England

Saw the Sanford Mainers play a double header against the  Mystic Schooners in Sanford, Maine, winning both by narrow margins. Last night saw the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox defeat the Chatham Anglers 10-3 in Chatham, Mass. Great summer baseball in New England.

There were five or six major league scouts in Chatham to spot a red-hot fastballer pitching for Yarmouth-Dennis. We happened to be seated right behind the plate, where they sat. The kid, from Stanford U., could throw a 98-mph fast ball and had an 80-mph change-up. Major league material. Heard a lot of great stories.

Sanford has a great ballpark, built for the textile mill teams that used to play there before the mill closed in 1952. Babe Ruth played his last game in a Boston Red Sox uniform in Sanford, and hit a home run that day, summer barn-storming.

The Great Oz has spoken!
