I'd wait until new Moskalenko's title come out.

Seemingly NiC has published "The Perfect Pirc-Modern" today. An excerpt is available online. But as the title suggests it contains nothing about 1.d4.

I would like to start with 1…d6 (rather than 1…g6) since I prefer to transpose into a Philidor rather than into a Pirc when white allows that.

The Philidor transposition is usually the sequence, 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 e5. So really the choice comes very early on as to whether to play Nf6 or not. It's very possible to play the Modern with d6, g6, Bg7 etc. and hold the transposition to a Pirc in reserve. Once g6 and Bg7 have been played, the Philidor option is no longer available.

Well, 1. e4 d6 ; 2. d4 Ktf6  ; 3. Ktc3 Ktbd7 ; 4. f4 and 4. g4 do not transpose to the Philidor either and the OP is apparently playing the Modern rather than the Pirc so presumably not answering 2. Ktc3 with 2. ...Ktf6.
I can only speculate that he intends the Philidor vs 2. Ktf3 and the Modern vs 2. d4 or 2. Ktc3. Admittedly he wouldn't be getting too many Philidors since 2. Ktf3 must be rather uncommon.

By the way, after 1. e4 d6 ; 2. Ktc3 Ktf6 ; 3. f4, the move 3. ...d5!? is a reasonable and interesting try discussed some time ago in a thread devoted to the Bird.

there is the issue of 1. e4 d6 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4. If Black insists on a Philidor with 3..e5, White plays 4.Nf3 and now :
- 4..Nc6 5.Bb5 is an improved King's gambit, since after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 ef 3.Bc4 Nc6, White often plays Bc4-b5 at some stage.
- 4..Nbd7 5.Bc4 is an improved Philidor because of f4-Nf3.

1.e4 e5 specialists can say if it really makes a difference. If so, Black can consider playing the Pirc after 2.Nc3, and the Philidor vs the rest.

I'm curious as to how you plan to achieve that. Are you intending 1. e4 d6 ; 2. Ktf3 Ktf6 ; 3. Ktc3 e5 and 2. ...g6 against everything else ?

Unfortunately in Watson´s book there are only 4 pages  about 1.d4 g6 where he mainly looks at 2.c4 Bg7 3.e4 d6 4.Nc3 Nc6 and 4... Nd7. Surprisingly he doesn´t cover 4... e5.

His conclusion: "Wether Black stands objectively worse or not, most leading players don´t want to deal with the difficulties that this presents in practice, and either avoid it, or take the opportunity to transpose to the King´s Indian."

Not really encouraging...

But otherwise I agree with you that he gives a good overview of both sides possibilities after 1.e4 g6.

I'd have a look at Watson's Mastering the Chess Openings v4.  There's 35-40 pages on the Modern complexes and as always, they're well researched and well explained.

About Lakdawala´s book see this thread:

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1347758301

You will probably be hard pressed to find a book with an either good and comprehensive coverage of the Modern vs. d4. Even Tiger´s book isn´t convincing here, but if I remember correctly he states in the book that originally he didn´t intent to cover 1.d4 at all, considering a transposition to a KID almost obligatory. Still he has some interesting things to say here.

Lakdawala is very superficial and only of some use combined with Tiger´s work.

Btw, I am not aware of a book combining the Philidor vs. 1.e4 with the Modern vs. 1.d4  Sad.

Hi, fairchess!
There are many books available for the so-called Modern Defence.
Since it is not cutting edge theory I think you can look even at some old books which are not outdated.
Such as the fantastic Jon Speelman & Neil McDonald's book - "Modern Defence" (Everyman Chess, 2000).
A little bit outdated, but really, really great is John Norwood's "Winning with The Modern" (Batsford, 1994).
Bogdan Lalic & Vladimir Okhotnik's "Carpathian Warrior" (V.Padiak Publishers) in two volumes (2005 & 2008) is maybe one of best opening books that never got the fame they deserved. Full of independent analyses! But not for beginners..

Books I never owned:
Nigel Davies - Starting Out, The Modern (Everyman Chess, 2008)
Andrew Martin's "Hippopotamus Rises, The Re-emergence of a chess opening" (Batsford, 2005)
...as well as many other books that treat Pirc & Modern in the same time..  Wink

Thanks RdC

Tiger’s book looks very interesting and also covers 1.d4

Could anyone give his opinion about Lakdawala’s book on the modern and compare it to Tiger’s? Which of them would you recommend?

Lakdawala’s book is a poor copy of Tiger's repertoire. I'd wait until new Moskalenko's title come out.

There's Tiger's Modern from a few years ago. This advocates playing 1 .. d6 2 .. g6 3 .. Bg7 and now the key move 4 .. a6 .

Here's a review from 2005 mentioning some of the then alternative books.

Can you help me to find the appropiate book about the modern defence?

Please let me know some titles and if possible your opinion about them. Also if the book is not only a defence against 1.e4, but also builds a repertoire against 1.d4 and other first moves by white.

I would like to start with 1…d6 (rather than 1…g6) since I prefer to transpose into a Philidor rather than into a Pirc when white allows that.

Thanks
