Another thought on that is that ...Qc7 in a Classical Scheveningen would mean some limiting of Black's possibilities -- e.g. there is stuff involving leaving the queen on d8 for a while which has been played by such as Vlastimil Jansa and his former student David Navara.

Thank you for your input. Generally, I don't mind playing the Kan type of Maroczy since it is different from the accelerated one.

However, if I manage to transpose into a Scheveningen, is there any drawbacks in having played Qc7?

It would mean that he could play 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e6, meaning that he would face the exact same anti sicilians as he currently does with his Accelerated Dragon.

Another try is the Taimanov move order, 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cd 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 and now 5...d6!?, avoiding the Keres attack.

Of course, White has 5.Nb5 with another whole can of worms...there's no perfect solution.

I basically meant that such an approach by Black won't always lead to a Scheveningen -- e.g. 5. Bd3 Nf6 6. 0-0 d6 7. c4 is an old main line of the Kan (or Paulsen as I learned it ...never mind).   On 5. Nc3 Qc7 6. Bd3, 6...Nf6 7. 0-0 d6 and (maybe preferable) 7...Bc5 8. Nb3 Be7 are recognized possibilities leading to (stuff classified as) a Scheveningen.

One of my other thoughts was that a ...d6 approach could land Black in a somewhat inferior version of the English Attack after 5. Nc3 Qc7, but as far as I know, for White to aim for an English via this move order would be like trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

5. c4. - I don't mind playing Maroczy. A lot easier to play for a win here than in the Accelerated dragon type of Maroczy.

But what do you mean by the two other variations that you mentioned?

5. Bd3
5. Nc3 Qc7 6. Bd3

Can I play for example Nf6 and a later d6 in these positions or am I best advised to stay in Kan?

Well, a few of the considerations are that it allows 5. Bd3, 5. Nc3 Qc7 6. Bd3, and 5. c4.

I have been playing accelerated dragon for many years. It is a nice opening but it is difficult to play for a win a black so I'm looking for an extra opening.

I have been thinking of playing the Scheveningen with the Kan move order (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 a6 5. Nc3 Qc7 with a later d6). I am not very familiar with open Sicilians so I would like to get some feed-back from more experienced players. Is there any drawback with this move order?
