In all of the games that I've found reaching the position at move 8, White has always preferred either 8. Bb3 or 8. O-O. Black then almost always plays .. d6 or .. d5. Some of these have been GM v GM encounters, Bologan v Huebner from 1994 being one of the earliest.

I do not see in what way 8. h3 prevents or discourages 8. .. d5, so it must be a candidate move. Playing 8. .. h6 isn't necessary to prevent Bg5 while the Knight is still on d2.

You can play 9...d5

Quite.  And in the move order given it’s not clear to me why Black needs to play ... h6.  Why not 8 ... d5 instead?

TBH, I’m not whatever the problem is that the OP sees.

... he is playing Nd2 Nf1 followed by g4 or Ng3

This is not really effective if Black hasn´t spent time on ...a6 and ...Ba7 since now he can play in the centre with ...d5.

Here is a correspondence game of mine, as a second player:

5...0-0, 6...d6, 7...Ne7, 8...Ng6 is a good plan for black which was recommended by Larry Kaufman in his book "The Kaufman Repertoire For Black & White", 2012.  Wink

u meant plan with a5??? Is there something better than that?

I meant to instead of 5...a6 play 5...0-0 and aim to play d7-d5.

I would suggest to deviate on move five and play 5... 0-0 (aiming for a quick d5) as advocated by Lysyj and Ovetchkin in their "The Open Games for Black".
