To emphasise the range of playing styles of the top Caro Kann practitioners I'd add Topalov to the list. Not my favourite player but one who is always trying to squeeze the maximum out of a position.

When I say Karpov I am more talking about how he could squeeze something out of generally thought to be equal endgames. He kind of started the Caro-Kann revolution.

Its a fair point though - he played the ...Nd7 variation in his prime and now everybody seems to go ...Bf5

Inn2 and Keano, thanks for your suggestions! I suppose I should look at how Karpov handled it. At any rate, for now, I am going to use Houska's book on the CK. I don't know how Karpov fits in yet.

Karpov had a particular interpretation of the Caro: mainly 4... Nd7 Smyslov and 5... e6 in the Panov. It might be blasphemy to say this... but as a Caro player who plays neither of these variations as my main weapons, I am not sure whether his games are any more relevant than the other players on TD's list!

Best would be to play through Karpov's old games first to get a feel for it. Then you can worry about theory.

TD's list is good and for sure games of Dreev, Fridman, Khenkin, Riazantsev and Anand are a must to start with for the modern theory of this opening.

I would also add Burmakin (a true C-K devotee who even has a variation named after him) and Chinese GM Ding Liren (one of my favourite players).

I also recall reading a comment in NIC that Grischuk is arguably the strongest C-K specialist in the world these days (?!).

They are not all contemporary but I have previously used a list of players to look up games in The Week In Chess:
Adams, Anand, Arkell, Bareev, Bologan, Dautov, Dreev, Fridman, Houska, Karpov, Khenkin, L'Ami, Nisipeanu, Rausis, Riazantsev, Seirawan, Speelman, Schandorff, Turov, Zelcic.

I am taking up the Caro-Kann. I'd like to study the games of players who specialize in it. Please recommend some contemporary GMs who play this regularly. Thanks!
