Yes. it might be, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, actually, and it is quite possible that Eric's analysis from 2005 is faulty. Shocked Maybe Richard P will sort this out some time.

Yes, I suppose 6 Qd2 may well be best, but I'm happy to believe that Stockfish is doubtful!

I think 5...g6 is Black's best. What better ways for Black are you referring to? 5...a6 6.Qe2! has been thought to be slightly better for White.

I would be interesting in seeing some analysis after 5...g6 6.Qd2. The computers prefer Black.

It's in a note to the Winants-Korneev game, Game 1 in the November 2005 update.
Presumably White has a better move than 8 c3 or 8 Nc7+, as otherwise play would transpose into Richard's next note (to 5...Bg7 6 Nb5) at best, as you point out, and maybe Black has better moves than ...Bg7.
Maybe the Morris Gambit is simply not very good!

After 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 c5 3.e4!? dxe4 4.d5 Nf6 5.Nc3, Richard Palliser gives the move 5...g6 a "?!" due to 6.Nb5! Na6 7.d6!. However, I don't see compensation for White after 7...Be6!. This is similar to the line 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 c5 3.e4!? dxe4 4.d5 g6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Nb5 Na6 7.d6 where Palliser recommends 7...Be6! for Black.
