The voting is anonymous. I'm pretty sure political candidates usually vote for themselves, but of course nobody knows for sure.

I have the 6.Bg5 book and the Leningrad book and thought both were of a high caliber. It's just going to be tough for most books this year! I know The Killer Sicilian will go down fighting with 1 vote for sure. Wait, is there a clause about voting for your own book? Do I have to vote for Negi?

I think that three candidates that are underrated are the 6. Bg5 book, Awrukh's Slav Grandmaster Repertoire, and Leningrad Dutch by Chess Stars. I play openings of the first two boos, but I think latter is excellent despite not having never played it as Black. I am not very high rated like GM or nothing (FIDE 2300-2350), but they serve me highly. I see Leningrad book as one book that could regenerate this opening at higher levels in this moment, when the entire Dutch Defence is not often played by GMs.

I wrote one ( Wink) and I own 7 others. I think it will be hard for maybe all but 2-3 of those books to even get a large fraction of the votes that Negi gets (I think it will be the default for those who haven't read a lot of these), but it was a decent lot this year. I don't own Bologan's book, but it has gotten very favorable reviews as well.

My feeling is that the votes will be split between Negi and Bologan's books...perhaps the stronger players perhaps going for the former and less strong players the latter?

Good work! I wonder how many of those the average user/poll voter has actually seen. I have worked with one of those, had a look at a few lines in another two and held one other book in my hands. Can't say that this enables me to make a meaningful vote really ...

Crap, you're right - removed. Such is the danger when using Amazon to check for new books - there were a ton of reprints and Kindle version, etc,  listed there as well.

An aside - if you're in the States, Chess4Less now has my book listed for sale - check it out!

A Strategic Chess Opening Repertoire for White - Watson, April

Watson's is a 2012 book. Maybe 2014 is for an e-book edition.
In general the quality of modern chess opening books is outstanding.  Each one is akin to a textbook on a technical specialized subject.
I bought only one chess book in the last 12 months: BBW.
(which obviously stands for "Bologan's Black Weapons")
Tony's kalashnikov book looks impressive but i've not yet seen it at my local Barnes & Noble which still has  a healthy chess section, for now.

I went through Amazon out of sheer boredom, and jotted down a list of opening books that were published this year. Thought it might jog people's memories as to what was up for nomination for this year. The publication dates won't be exactly accurate - this is based off when they were available for purchase on US Amazon, which is typically a month or two off - if I remembered anything specifically coming out in a specific month, I backed it up. Around March or so I also started to run into books that I knew for a fact were published in late 2013, and so I stopped - it became too tedious to sort them out. Here's the list:

The Killer Sicilian - Rotella, December
The Liberated Bishop Defense - Bezgodov, December
The Modern Tiger - Hillarp Persson, December
Sveshnikov vs. the Anti-Sicilians - Sveshnikov, December
Bologan's Black Weapons - Bologan, November
The Czech Benoni in Action - Hoffman/Keener, November
The Modern Bogo - Antic/Maksimovic, November
Chess Developments: The Sicilian Najdorf 6.Bg5 - Goh Wei Ming, November
French Defense: The Solid Rubenstein Variation - Langrock, November
Sabotage the Grunfeld - Kaufmann, October
Grandmaster Repertoire: 1.e4 vs The French, Caro-Kann and Philidor - Negi - August
Grandmaster Repertoire: The Sicilian Sveshnikov - Kotronias - August
Steamrolling the Sicilian: Play for a Win with 5.f3! - Kasparov - August
The Diamond Dutch - Moskalenko - August
The Extreme Caro-Kann: Attacking Black with 3.f3 - Bezgodov, July
Opening Repertoire: The Fianchetto System - Lemos, July
Anti-Spanish: The Cozio Defence - Dreev, July
Play the Accelerated Dragon - Lalic, June
The Leningrad Dutch: An Active Repertoire Against 1.d4, 1.c4, 1.Nf3 - Malaniuk/Marusenko, May
Grandmaster Repertoire 17: The Classical Slav - Avrukh, April
Benko Gambit: Move by Move - Tay, April
A Practical White Repertoire with 1.d4 and 2.c4: Volume 3 - Kornev, April

Again, it would be really useful if you post the publication dates.

The Wei Ming book really is good, and a rather different style/approach to the mega tome, repitoire based efforts so worth consideration I think Smiley

Does Berg's volume 2 on the French defense fit in? Published 18th December last year so perhaps not. Rather a specalised affair of course!

Ahhhh good point about copyright date, that is the fairest method for sure. If I was a betting man I'd go with 2014.

Its not like it matters - my money is on Negi both years anyway!  Grin

Thanks for that info, Tony. Unfortunately, I think we have to go by publication date. Is the copyright 2014 or 2015?

I will leave it up to the readers, but 2015 might be a better time to evaluate The Killer Sicilian. The book isn't released in the States yet, so between that and shipping, there are perhaps a lot of readers who won't get to check it out before this thread closes.
