There is also 3...d5, 4...Bb4+, and meeting 5.Bd2 with 5...Bd6.  This is completely unmentioned by Avrukh and was (is?) very popular at top level for a little while.  Black plans ...c6 and either ...e5 or a Stonewall depending on how White plays, with the Bishop on d2 misplaced.

My option is 3...d5, ready to follow 4...Ab4. And, of course, 5...Ae7 if White plays Bd2.

I think the most fitting choice would be 3...d5 followed by 4...Bb4 5.Bd2 Be7. If you prefer open positions, 3...d5/4...dxc4/5...Bb4 6.Bd2 a5 is quite solid.

I'm a little surprised too because i didnt think the Benoni was particularly popular...Although some Benoni players do only play it against nf3 set ups to avoid the sharper stuff white throws at it.

From memory of some of the older books, I think the g3 lines dont have a particularly good reputation against the benoni set up, so it would make sense for some players to switch into that set up....

g3 has been more in the limelight in the last few years, though.

From some recent Chess Publishing updates I got the impression that some Classical stuff which reminds me of the 1970s may be making a comeback.  Ah, the cycles of opening theory/fashion.

Interesting that many players plays Benoni vs g3, I always thought that most Nimzo/7C6C7F797B6D74711E01  repertoire books suggested 3 d5.
But on the other hand what do I know since I play Bogo Indian and have both c5 and Qe7 in my repertoire depending on opponent.

One might think that some Anderssonian Bogo stuff should be hard to beat at least with regard to the last bit ...

I was wondering what is a reliable response for 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3, in other words, like Awrukh style (I play this as White Smiley) for Black, for someone who plays the NID/QID complex for 3. Nc3/3. Nf3, and also something with a balance between reliable/sound but with reasonable counterplay without unnecessary risk for a >2300 FIDE.

Quite a lot play the Modern Benoni against the 3. g3 with 3...c5, some do the Bogo setup with 3...Bb4 and either 4...c5 or 4...Qe7. The Modern Benoni is a bit risky to me, and I am not sure about what the Bogo reputation is nowadays. The Catalan, although solid, never seemed to me to fit with a NID/QID complex, neither even the Slaw, because the character of play is very different (like Caro-Kann and French being light square defences but very different styles of play anyway). 3...d5 seems to me to fit only QGD players well, I would never play like this being a Slaw player.

About reliability, what would be a choice if had to ask "Would I play this against a GM and keeping a solid position?" or "Would I play this in a team event where my job is to play solidly and not play a crazy position?"
