Only plays in proprietary chessbase software and from the free samples seems nothing special.

For French Fans, verdict = a solid no.

So, I heard that he advocates taking the pawn in the Alekhine-Chatard.

As a general rule, italics may be better for emphasis than caps which can seem aggressive and appear to be SHOUTING. Agree?

Go for it, pull the Visa trigger, give us your verdict Smiley

Oh, so you haven't seen THIS DVD?

I love the French, and I've played it for well over twenty years. I'm pretty tempted to get this despite my disappointment with some past Chessbase DVD's.

In my opinion "Power Play 22 Repertoire for Black With the French" is for the average player up to 1800.

What is that based on? You've watched it?

I watched some videos and I know the 1.e4-Repertoire-DVDs of the Powerplay series.

Perhaps you are right. Criticising a Ford Fiesta for not being a tank, in a way.
That said, I do wonder about some of the repertoire choices in some of these things.
Path of least preparation resistance, it appears. Understandable I guess - bang one out, onto the next. And we all have to put bread on the table, pay the bills. A classic bad rep choice has been the Caro Kann Exchange, a choice made by several Usual Suspects.

Not everybody is interested by analytical depth. Clarity of the presentation, or highlighting some points making the learning process easier are probably very valuable for many potential customers.

I guess the market is not the same than for QC.

I agree. Writing a book involves a lot more work than a DVD particularly if you are aiming for excellence. Sadly there are too many chess DVDs where you get the impression that not too much effort was put in. Fortunately there are DVD authors who make a real effort to instruct such as King, Bologan, Kritz and Ramirez.

Sometimes it is good to look at cost/benefit when choosing between different options.

”Playing the French” by Jacob Aagaard and Nikolaos Ntirlis - 24,99 Euro
”Powerplay 22: A Repertoire For Black With the French Defence” by Daniel King – 29,90 Euro

I am very ignorant in this area but is it really so much more labor intense to make a DVD compared to a paper book?

What kind of proof is that?

I have seen the introduction and the first game. King is a good presenter and has the ability to explain things very well. I am around 2100 and learned something and I have played French at CC.  My initial impression is that the training questions are well done and instructive and I suspect this is the strength of the dvd. If game 1 is anything to go by theory is light but one could pick up a few ideas for ones repertoire. There is a database of games which might provide further information on the lines but I have not looked at that yet.

Quote:
The French Defence is one of the most reliable openings against 1 e4. The solid central pawn chain protects Black’s king and provides the basis for counter-attacks on both wings. On this DVD Grandmaster Daniel King offers you a repertoire for Black with the French. Based around ten stem games, all White’s major lines against the French are covered. The French Defence is one of the most flexible of openings. This DVD explores different systems so that you can always keep your opponent guessing as to your choice. Complete games are discussed so that one gains an idea about typical strategies for both sides. More than that, these model games provide inspiration to play the opening. This is an interactive DVD. At key moments in the games Grandmaster King pauses and puts you on the spot. You will have to find and play the best move. He then gives feedback in further video clips according to the move you chose.

A complete French repertoire for Black

    Suitable for club players

Model games with typical middlegame strategy

    Up-to-date theory

Video running time: 4 h 43 min (English)

Quote:
Foxy Openings #24 French 1 (DVD) - King
This dvd presents a complete system for Black against 1.e4. French expert GM Daniel King considers the Advance Variation (3.e5), the Exchange Variation (3.exd5), the King's Indian Attack (2.d3), and recommends a dynamic line that can be played against 3.Nc3 or 3.Nd2, that is 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 (or 3.Nd2) Nf6 4.e5 Ne4!? Virtually all of King's analysis in this line is new!

Specifications:

    Run Time: 85 minutes

Quote:
Foxy Openings #25 French 2 (DVD) - King

In the second of his two videos on the French, GM Daniel King takes a more detailed look at 3.Nd2 and 3.Nc3. Against each move King recommends his own favorite systems and in addition reveals secret weapons employed by his grandmaster colleagues!
