I see that Lakdawala had the following to say about this variation in his recent book:

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tenement roofs illuminated..."

So I would do what Eric said and just play for an improved French.

Well, that's a roundabout way of saying ”Here we have a bad French and a bad Caro."

I'd think that just 3.Nf3 d5 4.e5 would be quite good, it's just a tempo-up Advance French.

I mean this is just junk for Black (that's my curmudgeony side, I guess).

Poking through the database, I don't really see an idea beyond 1)a poor French/Caro, or 2) a strange way of adopting a Hippo sort of approach.  I mean this is just junk for Black (that's my curmudgeony side, I guess).

I would never play a move like 3.c3--why bolster d4 when Black has made it harder for himself to put any pressure on it?  White should develop quickly and exploit his lead in development.

3.Nc3 looks perfectly wonderful as well, perhaps keeping the option of Qg4 open should things go along French lines.

Really, any fourth move is liable to give an extra tempo over a Caro or French, and I doubt that Black has anything better than 3...d5.

There are games out there where Black has played .. a6 or .. h6.

3. c3 comes into consideration as well, bolstering the centre in anticipation of .. c5 .

I'm not sure what is Black's idea in deferring d5. Is it to get White to commit to a clumsy set up of his pieces with the extra tempo?

Of course Black can do this via the Caro-Kann with 1.e4 c6 2.d4 e6 as well.

It seems like the natural way to take advantage of the lack of pressure on e4 is to play 3.Nf3. If now 3...d5 (Black wants to play this at some point, right?) then I see that 4.Nbd2 has performed well, and I would be very happy to play it; after say 4...Nf6 5.e5 White is basically a tempo up on a standard Tarrasch French, since Black is going to play ...c5 at some point.

Hello all,

I came across the unusual sequence 1. e4 e6 2. d4 c6 for the first time today.  My game continued 3. c4 d5 4. ed cd 5. Nc3 Nf6 6. Nf3 with a transposition to the Panov-Botvinnik.  A quick look in the database indicates that this isn't actually as rare as I'd thought, but I assume it can't be entirely correct.  Any thoughts on the best line against it?  Does it have a name, and are there any sources that deal with it?

Thanks.
