I mentioned it when this came up before, but I think of 10. Bb3 Nxd4 followed by ...b5 as "Parma's equalizing finesse," because that's what David Levy called it in The Sicilian Dragon (1972).

While it's technically a Dragon Proper indeed chances to play it via the Accelerated Dragon are higher.
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.f3 Bg7 7.Be3 O-O 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.Bc4 Bd7 10.Bb3 Nxd4 11.Bxd4 b5 is called the Forintos Variation, after the Hungarian champion of 1968. With this move order White can avoid it with 10.h4 and 10.O-O-O.
So what's this obsession with Accelerated Dragon advocates to avoid the Dragon Proper at all costs?!

White can more or less force Black into a Soltis with 10...h5

You probably mean 10.h4 h5 11.Qd2 Ne5 12.O-O-O Rc8. The Soltis is the most reliable, but there are some playable deviations for Black.

Indeed. Although the line that occured in the game I believe is specific to the Accelerated Dragon, I recall from Greet's book that White can more or less force Black into a Soltis with [EDIT: 10 h4].

Hello Accelerated Dragon fans!

Please take a look at this game, it's really an excellent marketing for our beloved opening....

I am very happy with my "countryman's" victory, but Panjwani would call this line an un-accelerated Dragon. Wink

Well, against very hard opposition I usually play the French, so very few theoretical battles in my games in the Sicilian. Lots of closed sicilians Smiley

I got main line Acc Dragon only twice in my games. Both Nb3 variation; and I suffered a little in one game (Bg5xf6 gxf6 and Nb5 by White) but I equalized convincingly and in the other zero problems after conventional-sicilianish play by White (0-0 f4 Be2 Bf3) where my counterattack in the queenside was quick enough to balance the game.

I have the feeling that Bb3 is harder to meet. Maybe the a6 lines are interesting... I tend to play very standard with d6+Bd7 and see what White does.

Thx guys !

I agree. In the Dragon Proper after 6.h3 Bg7 7.Be3 O-O 8.Bc4 Nc6 9.Bb3 Black has better than Qa5 10.O-O.
Or will Panjwani avoid tis with 7...Qa5 8.O-O e6 or something?

It seems to me that as White this is worth preparing if you know Black follows Panjwani's recommendations.

Why do you get away from 7...Qa5 (the line I play and the line he recommends) ?

I had the feeling that Black is fighting an uphill battle in the Bb3 lines. Maybe I'm wrong, but Black has many interesting alternatives these days, like (7...0-0 8.Bb3) 8...Re8, 8...e6 and Panjwani's 8...a6. And transposing to the "real" Yugoslav Attack should always be an option when White has committed to an early Bb3.

It would be interesting to see how Lemos responds to Negi's lines with Bb3 (the same goes for Panjwani, which I will buy soon). There's also the question of how Black adjusts if he's itching to play e6 and Be5 in the Maroczy "main line" but White goes Bf2 instead of Be3, taking ...Qh4 off the table immediately.

But for now I passed on the DVD since it sounds like it's not detailed enough for my needs. There was a sale with 55% off that expired yesterday, and I'm not going to pay the full price of 99 USD for this.

While I dont play Accelerated Dragon we had tried to discuss Qa5 in this thread.
After 0-0 with the idea of Nb3 White gets a good version of a Be2 line some tempo up.
Latest Word in this thread was that White gets a small plus.

Why do you get away from 7...Qa5 (the line I play and the line he recommends) ?

I have not viewed in detail the videos against Qxd4, because I play 2...Nc6 move order (I am well prepared in the Rossolimo, I think) but he give two videos in the Nc7 retreat (I thought he would like most the Nb6 plus a quick d5, à-la-Perelshteyn). He explains very well the lines he gives, but the problem is he omits some options (as I said he explains "from zero" the subtilities of all the lines and this requires time).

The Maroczy main line is (as all the other lines) well explained in the moves he gives. The problem is the moves he don't give. And maybe you (and probably me) need more analysis and the final assessment on the position after the analysis... than the explanation on why the a5 move is important or why exchanging the g7 is good.

One of the lines I like in the clips I have viewed is precisely the Maroczy main line, the "new" ideas putting the bishop on e5, pawns on d6 and e6, and try to attack with Qh4 if White is not prepared. Maybe they are not new, but I haven't seen before, and my opening preparation is far above my usual opposition (between 1800-2200 fide range), as all of us here I think.

It seems I don't like the dvd because of my comments, and it's not true. It's a good work. And I know lots of people in my club (2200 fide) that would benefit a lot from it because they play openings like a 1500-kid  Cheesy. We are complicated in that way.

Salut,

@CanadianClub:

Thanks for the review, I appreciate it!

I guess I am outside the target audience then. I've played the AD now and then for years, but that just goes to show how little concrete knowledge you can get away with in the 2000-2300 range!

I'm still tempted because it looks like a quick way to get a repertoire together in the Maroczy and the early anti lines (I'm moving away from 7...Qa5 which I believe he gives against 7.Bc4).

How thorough does his stuff on 4.Qxd4 and the traditional Maroczy main line look?

A bit of a side point: Has anybody used Lemos' recent "Deep Dive" video series on the (Hyper) Accelerated Dragon? Any views, positive or negative?

It is 8 hours, so quite long for a DVD, but you still get less analysis than in a book, of course.

It's not as basic as other Lemos DVDs but his "theorical" audience might be players below 1700-1800 FIDE. In a chess24 video series, or in a Bologan/Tiviakov/Collins standard chessbase dvd of 4 hours there are more info for sure. He speaks very slow (not bad if your English level is not high), he presents/reviews complete games (not only the opening moves) and he covers all the possible lines starting with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 (included the deferred Alapin with 3.c3). I like it because the ideas he covers... are explained in great detail (even repeated in different videos xDD).

As an example, he covers the Maroczy 10.Nc2 ("the critical line") in a video of about 20 minutes and his move is Iturrizaga's 10...Be6. For me the more critical is f4 by White as someone pointed in this thread before (not allowing the Nd7-Nc5 maneuver). He says about 11.f4 that f5 is not a treat because of the e5 hole it produces and after 11...Rc8 "White is slightly better but Black is ok". The critical line for me... analyzed in one minute of the video. He analyses extensively a game by Iturrizaga where White plays 11.f3 (not f4).

I like the DVD but... an experienced Acc. Dragon player is not going to discover any new ideas.

Obviously it'd be wrong to quote the book in detail, but I guess 10 Nc2 is the major challenge and it'd be interesting to know a bit in general terms about his response to that. Iturrizaga seems to confidently play 10 ...Be6!? here, but then how best to proceed if White prevents ...Nd7 with 11 f4?

I think that i'll get the book very soon anyway, but i'd appreciate to hear what is the author's main idea in the Classical Marozcy nightmare!
