That 9...e5 (which I recall getting some renewed attention in the '90s) had crossed my mind in terms of Black trying to play "ferociously."

The only game I've found where the author faced the Maroczy is this:

I only know of this blurb:  "With 15...e6 instead of the old main move 15...Qb6 Robert Ris pleads for a somewhat more active approach. If White does not know what he is doing, there are several ways he can immediately fall into a trap. Even with best play it is not clear whether White gets an advantage."

@kylemeister: Yes, that's the line I'm thinking of. How did the CBM article evaluate this? I don't subscribe to it at the moment.

Black also needs to think through some move order issues to play this line: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.c4 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Nc3 0-0 8.Be2 d6 9.0-0 Bd7 allows 10.Nc2!? while 9...Nxd4 10.Bxd4 Bd7 gives White a couple of other interesting ways to deviate.

White can also play 9.0-0 Bd7 10.Qd2 Nxd4 11.Bxd4 Bc6 12.f3 Nd7 13.Bf2, which takes Black's ...Qh4 idea off the table. There must be some downside to 13.Bf2 since 13.Be3 is more common, but I've never understood what the downside is! Edit: It may have something to do with ...h5 and ...Bh6 being easier to arrange for Black. I'm no expert on these lines from either side, though I have tried them out with Black in blitz.

Maybe you mean after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.c4 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Nc3 0-0 8.Be2 d6 9.0-0 Bd7 10.Qd2 Nxd4 11.Bxd4 Bc6 12.f3 Nd7 13.Be3 a5 14.b3 Nc5 15.Rab1.  That was the subject of a CBM article a couple of issues ago.

One possible choice against the Maroczy is ...e6 and ...Be5 in some order in the main line (non-Gurgenidze - not sure if it has a name).

This has been trendy the last few years. It's sharp, but there are some forced draws in the bargain if White is unambitious and just allows ...Qh4, g3 Bxg3 etc.

I didn't know the Maroczy Bind could get a ferocious treatment so I'm eager to see what he has in mind.


This must be pure Hyperbole, I hope he isn't proposing the move-order: 1e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 Bg7?! as this is just plain bad for black.

I was perusing the Thinkers Publishing website for upcoming books and I came upon this title as being scheduled to be released in October 2016: "The Hyper Accelerated Dragon, a repertoire for Black" by IM Raja Panjwani.

Anybody know more about this upcoming book?
