Hello.

Negi covers this Cheesy.

(p.137) (via different move order) (He thinks black is fine after 12.Bxf6 Bxf6 so 12.Bxf6 is not his recommendation).

Have a nice day.

In many lines of the Bg5 Najdorf, Black will play .. b5. In his annotations in 60 Memorable Games, Fischer would reckon that a3 was mandatory. Later in one of this 1980s books, Nunn thought it best avoided.

More recently, it has become fashionable to play Qe2 against move orders that don't contain an early .. Be7. a3 appears necessary in these lines as the tempting Nd5 sacrifice doesn't seem to work.

I expect it has been played before, but here's a game where White uses an idea (f5 offering the g5 pawn) from Qf3 systems in a Qe2 context.

According to engines, Black should play 14. .. e5. White only seems to have 15. Nf3 defending the pawn.
