I remember that Leko discussed this subject briefly on the Chess24 Grenke broadcast earlier this year. I think it was round 5, Caruana - MVL.

Anyway, he essentially said that 7...h6 avoids some of White's more annoying sidelines, but allows this 9.a3 line. I think that many players are realizing that 9.a3 is actually very dangerous for Black, which is why we've seen more 7...Qb6 at the top level recently.

I had wondered the same myself! It's probably that players are quite happy to face 9.a3 as it leads to very sharp and unclear play where Black can play for a win without being objectively worse, whereas after 7...Qb6 8.Qd3 or 8.Qd2 Qxb2 9.Rb1 Qa3 10.f5 White can basically force a draw with good preparation. Furthermore, there was a high level win with 7...Qb6 8.Nb3 (though not because of the opening), which can be avoided by 7...h6 8.Bh4 Qb6 because of 9.Nb3 Qe3.

Anyway, many Najdorf experts play both move orders, to keep the opponent guessing. Add e.g. 6...Nbd7 to your repertoire, and White would have to cover a lot of ground in his preparation.

It seems like 7... Qb6 is just a better move order than the Delayed Poisoned Pawn move order: 7... h6. 7... h6 just allows White to go 9. a3! Which has been doing well at the top level lately. 7... Qb6 does give White the opportunity to go 8. Qd3, but 9. a3 is much stronger that 8. Qd3. Can anyone explain the drawbacks of 7... Qb6 vs. 7... h6?
