I started to use new free web publishing viewers on my blog see http://schaken-brabo.blogspot.be/2017/07/nieuwe-viewers.html
I also want to thank the excellent site of https://ingram-braun.net/public/programming/web/testpages/chess-game-viewer/repl... which let me learn a lot about the different viewers.

I have to correct myself. It seems there is a way to turn off the "pay-wall" thingy 'cos this blog also allows download of games pgn:
http://www.thequietmove.com/dominance-and-counter-play/.

Perhaps the user-blogger needs click or unclick an option when saving games onto the cloud or using CB viewer. I don't have CB myself (not the full version, only a CB viewer which is free to download) and cannot help ......
perhaps someone should tell Matthew Sadler ??? no?

I'm not sure this is true. As part of my review this month (the blog version, that is) I put up some analysis of a game from the new book on Jay Bonin.

http://www.viewchess.com/cbreader/2017/6/1/Game1438266078.html

I am not logged into a Chessbase account in the browser, and I can download the pgn.

Can anyone else duplicate / refute?

Perhaps someone with greater knowledge can explain the technical side of what's happening.

Proustikeen is using:
http://www.viewchess.com/cbreader/2017
which is unaffected by the pay-wall;
others, e.g. Matthew Sadler, are using
http://cloudserver.chessbase.com
which requires CB Premium membership to download the pgn.

I am with Paddy here. I too used to download the games and annotations form CB but it is now behind a paywall. I think it is a mistake but then it is not my business.
But as a chess scrounger, very annoying!
And Paddy is also correct that it affects anyone else who is not CB but uses CB's viewer. I wonder if these non CB bloggers realise ......

Are we conflating two things here?

If I publish to the web via one-click from within Chessbase, or if I embed to my website with a Chessbase widget, there's no need for someone to be a Premium member, is there?

Yes, if I am not mistaken. Try for instance downloading the annotated games available at Matthew Sadler's excellent blog.

I've been thinking for my blog to switch from the free viewer of KVChess to the expensive viewer of Chessbase. I thought this could solve the flash issue for some readers. However now it makes no sense anymore. I don't want to limit the number of readers by demanding them to become premium Chessbase subscribers. Downloading of my annotations is possible and free via KVChess (you just need to click on the KVChess V2.31 button and you get access to the full pgn).

Chessbase can get away with this kind of very aggressive strategy as they have an absolute monopoly in the market. There are no strong competitors. It is unhealthy for the consumers. I am warning for this since many years already but what can we do about it except trying to avoid Chessbase as much as possible.

It looks like you just need the basic, free account. Still annoying to have to register, though.

No, I tried that. A premium account is necessary.

Chessbase website pay-wall

I regularly visit the Chessbase website and appreciate the frequency with which it is updated. I particularly like the numerous games and positions annotated by strong players and I like to download them in pgn to study on my computer.

Unfortunately Chessbase have recently decided that anyone wishing to download annotated games from their website needs to have a Premium subscription. That's fair enough I suppose.

I was quite shocked however to find that the same now applies to the downloads in pgn from other websites, e.g. Matthew Sadler's excellent blog. It seems that any website using the CB web application is also affected!
