5. Bb5 is the white idea. Look up a database to reveal the point of a3, but there definitely is one (:

"Black just plays a reversed Scotch Four Knights with 4...d5 where I know of no line that gives the pawn on a3 any meaning."

How does that line go? 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.d4 exd4 5.Nxd4 Nxe4 6.Nxe4 Qe7 7.f3 d5 8.Bb5 ... I think. This is one variation where a2-a3 matters in the reversed opening. But maybe black has some other way to equalize. I don't know, because I only looked at the Bb5 line for white, trying for advantage.

I think there can be no doubt that the Four Knights, be it Scotch, Spanish or whatever, just produces an equal game if Black reacts in some decent way.

If Williams´ primary recommendation is the Scotch Four Knights I wonder why he covers a move like 4.a3 at all. Black just plays a reversed Scotch Four Knights with 4...d5 where I know of no line that gives the pawn on a3 any meaning.

However, the good thing is that this illustrates that the Scotch Four Knights is important to know from both sides (!) for anyone willing to play 1.e4 e5 with Black.

Strange that 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5 Bc5! is not covered by Simon Williams. This is currently a popular and often recommended line for Black.

We all agree that it is strange that the move is not covered. My gues is that is becouse he went for Scotch Four Knights as primary repertoar choice. I also think d6  not covered is is even more strange since common at 1900 elo or when opponent is out of book.
An other strange choiche was to not cover Gleks g3 argueing equallite for black but covering Halloween, a3 and even Be2.

I do agree that Bc5 is a decent move but it is hardly the most critical line so I dont understand the ! mark. One book written for white claims that white score 61% in the databases after 0-0 0-0 Nxe5. Computer thinks it is completly equal however but maybee whites position is more easy to handle in over the board games. I have also met Bc5 0-0 d6 in some games where d4 is better for white.

I have bought this dvd now. He does not cover Gleks g3 system either.

The autors primary recommendation seems to be Four Knights Scotch Variation.
The explains why d6 or Bc5 in Spanish Four Knights are not covered.
In symmertical  6.d3 d6 7.Bg5 Ne7 the move 8 Nh4 is covered verbal and Bxf6 as an alternatve.

He also covers Belgrade gambit with some novelty and the dubiois Halooween gambit and shows how 4 a3 in some line can leed to an improved Halloween got White where some black options are ruled out and some option might weakens blacks position in the gambit..

I think that the line where black plays 4 .. d6 is realy missing.
It iis common line bellow 1900 elo.

About 4 ..Bc5, my books recommends different lines.
Two book goes for Nxe5 at once while one book goes for 0-0 first writing that white scores 61% after the reply 0-0 and now Nxe5.
However computer claims that both lines are equal but maybee whites position is easier to handle in practical play.

It does not seem to cover Rubenstein with 5 0-0 either, a line recommended for White in "Openings for Amateurs" and covered in "Dangereus Weapons e4 e5". I will buy this DVD and when a swedish chess shop gets it.

EDIT

And it does not cover Rubenstein with  5 Bc4 either.

In symmertical  6.d3 d6 7.Bg5 Ne7 the move 8 Nh4 is not covered either, and thats the mainline!

Although it's not a repertoire DVD as such, it looks as though its aim is to offer different ideas for playing this opening as White, so this is probably why it does not cover all options for the first player.

Unless I'm missing something the contents given by ChessBase don't seem to cover 4.Bb5 Bc5.

In light of my observation above, it should really cover Black's main options, so this does seem a bit of a glaring omission – unless perhaps this line gets talked about in passing in section 20 or 21.

One could wonder if it has anything to say about e.g. (4. Bb5) d6 or a6.  In this vein, I wonder what the average strength of people who buy such DVDs is.  I think years ago the target audience was said to be ~1700 players.

Unless I'm missing something the contents given by ChessBase don't seem to cover 4.Bb5 Bc5. Does anybody know any different ? This would seem odd as it is the recommended line in several repertoire books.
