After 9.Re1 black should immediately castle queenside. ie.9.... O-O-O.

what about 9.Re1 first allowing Bf1 if Black plays Nf4

anyway I think 4...g6 is OK for Black

My extensive analysis of the Alekhine’s Defence shows that this defence is sufficiently robust and black can present dynamic play even in correspondence games situations. The main line of the Alekhine’s Defence Modern variation involves 4.Ne5  dxe5   5.Ne5 c6  6.Be2 Bf5
and black has dynamic resources with the continuation eg. 7.O-O Nd7  8.Nf3 Qc7!? 9.c4 Nf4  10.Nc3 e6  11.d5 Bc5  (11….Nxe2 12.Qxe2 Bd6!? etc) 12.Bxf4 Qxf4  13.dxc6 bxc6 14.Qa4 Qc7 etc

I tend to agree with Markovich, in that the Alekhine probably isn't reliable enough for correspondence in the critical 4.Nf3 variation. OK, with enough work you could probably engine spam the 4...dxe5 5.Nxe5 c6 line and know how to hold a worse position to a draw, but I figure that's not the reason you're drawn to the Alekhine.

Blitz is another story - you'll get the Exchange lines in nearly every game, and hardly anyone has a clue how to deal with 5...cxd6 (playing an early Nf3 or the Voronezh setup with no idea how to follow up).

Sicilian/French seem the best choices for dynamic play without an objective disadvantage, but that's for a different Forum.

The Alekhine Defence may be one of the very few openings with which I have no experience from either side. I seem to remember that Markovich played it as Black on the Chesspub ICCF Champions League team a number of years ago. At the time, he indicated that it might not be quite good enough for correspondence chess. Any thoughts? For whatever reason, I'm finally intrigued and thinking about studying it. But is it better for online blitzing than more in-depth cc analysis?
