I remember seeing this game: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1728504

Diverges with 5...Qa5

It looked unpleasant for black. I'll trust Hawkins' prep.
White argues that "Yeah, supposedly weak pawns, but my Irish pawns take squares and space, and you cannot attack them by putting your pieces on the right squares. That is because your bishop cannot get out easily - thanks front Irishman! - which blocks any quick attempt to get the c-file"

And, let's not forget, one of those three tripled pawns is an extra pawn for White to boot!

5...Qa5, as in the game you've linked to, seems to be Black's usual move there, but after 6.Qd4 Nf6 7.Qb4, White scores extremely well. Hawkins tends to be well-prepared, so I don't doubt he'd looked at the line before that rather convincing win.

I haven't got Storey's DVD – nor do I intend to get it – but I infer from the Chessbase commenter referred to above that 5...Nf6 is the improvement given by Storey. According to my database, Storey himself has essayed it twice, and both of those games continued with 6.Bd3. The suggestion mentioned above of 6.e5 Ne4 7.Bc4 Nxc5 does indeed look more dangerous to my eyes – and there's not really any need to force matters after that with 8.Qd5: White's position feels a lot more comfortable after simple development with 8.Nf3. Black's got no counterplay and those two bishops look extremely dangerous.

The position bears some resemblance to certain lines of the French Winawer where White plays dxc5, accepting shattered pawns in exchange for the bishop pair and for creating open lines that they can use. Here, though, White controls more central space than in those Winawer lines, where Black's pawns on e6 and d5 at least give White work to do to open the position further. This Sniper line looks pretty grim for Black, and it's certainly not one I'd be particularly happy to adopt as part of my repertoire.

That's a good question. Someone commenting on the Chessbase feature has asked about this line:
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c5 4.dc Bc3 5.bc Nf6 6.e5 Ne4 7.Bc4 Nc5 8.Qd5
The poster claims that it doesn't look good for Black, with White having the bishop pair and more space, while Black's king has no obvious place to go to for shelter. Storey has replied in less-than-concrete fashion, thus:

"if you think you can play like a 3500 engine to bring home you 4.dc! I would love to see you try!"

which, while not being a particularly constructive response, is at least not overtly rude.

The author does not present himself too well, agreed. Comes across as sharp as a tennis ball and as funny as a burning orphanage.

Pterodactyl is also misspelled, by the author/presenter himself presumably, in the Chessbase feature just mentioned. So the likely explanation is he has been misspelling it all along, but in the book he was saved by an alert proofreader or editor at Everyman.

'Misspelled' is a charitable way of referring to the extraordinary 'Teradctaly', which is how the word is rendered in the feature!

The misspelling of "pterodactyl" is an offense that I hope is not committed on the actual DVD.

In his book he does indeed call the variation the Pterodactyl... Strange!

Yes, I second that!

Unfortunately, but perhaps unsurprisingly, the comments section of the Chessbase feature on the Sniper DVD is currently heading in precisely that direction.

Maybe soon enough he'll be recommending 3...d6 against 3 Nc3 as well as 3 Nf3  Wink

Looks strange. Many of the "theoretical" clips are not even 2 minutes long.

Storey doesn't seem to believe in the Sniper after 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 anymore (because of 3...c5 4.dxc5). Instead of 3...c5 he goes for the Pirc with 3...d6. Well, fair enough.

I'm curious what the first reviews will look like.

Oh dear. No, no, life is too short. Even if I had the elixir of life, like Fu Manchu, it still would be. Sorry Marcellus, I am running very quickly in the other direction. JEH just hides in a hedge. I actually scarper. You watch Flash on Netflix? Think him, with a badly upset stomach, and realising that the nearest clean public toilet is in the next town, five hundred miles down the road.

And the spelling perturbs me too. Or rather, it erturbs me, erhaps.
