No idea. There's certainly no magical ELO cut-off point. That being said, I've never been within 200 points of 2400 and I've never played the French Winawer, so I'm just providing an educated guess, mostly likely. My 2400 figure was sort of a rough estimate of where I'm pretty sure you'd be safe (hence the "at least").

Do you mean the viability of this line past 2400? This used to be the main line of the entire French Defence until the late 90s I think, so if it were not for fashion, I bet that this would be played by most GMs who played the French.

But I mean in the database, I have a hard time finding new games. Every couple of months someone plays it, but I know not exactly what the current assessments of this line are.

Unless I am missing correspondence games. I lack correspondence database  Cry

What's your approximate rating? I don't play the Winawer with either side, but I imagine (at least) 2400 and below you should be fine provided you know it well. That being said, a backup line (maybe ...Qa5-a4) wouldn't hurt.

Depends. Unfortunately I messed up in my last tournament (not due to this line though), so a little below 2300 FIDE now.

But what happens past 2400?

I wrote this last month, but does anyone here play this Winawer line exclusively?

For those of you who play the Winawer, especifically the main line with 7. Dg4 0-0 8. Ad3 Cbc6, and either choosing one (or all?!) of 13...Ad7, 13...Df7 or 13...b5 in the absolute main sequence, do you play this regularly as a French player?

I like this line as Black, but in the database Black's score is not very good. Maybe it is the rating difference, maybe Black players enter the line without preparing enough, I do not know. And the only one that seems to play it regularly is Miedema and some others, in the 2300+ range.

Any French players have a feeling about using this line regularly in basically any game situation ? Thanks.
