1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Bc5 3.Nxe5 Qe7 4.d4 d6 5.Nf3 Qxe4+ 6.Be2 is pretty bad for black. I had this on the board once, see the attached pgn, with notes by the club organizer. He was about 2100 USCF but was not really careful with his annotations. Anyway you can put it in an engine. I have to admit in this game I played 10.Bb5 without really paying attention. The funny opening had its intended effect! After that I was worried about whether black could actually be winning. But my opponent never got his pieces coordinated.

Hi,
- after 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Bb3, 4...d5 works nevertheless, as well as 4...Bc5. But White is not worse according to computers.
- the 4 Knights with 4.Bc4 (reached by transposition) is better avoided by White, since Black has an easy life after 4...Nxe4 and e.g. 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Bd3 dxe4 7.Bxe4 Bd6 8.0-0 0-0 intending ...f5 -say, 9.Re1 Nb4 and then ...f5) and White has to be accurate to maintain equality. On the plus side, most people think Black is better after 4.Bc4 Nxe4, so you can surprise them if you prepare for this position.

Another mistake:

Wagenbach: 4 Bc4 h4 5 Qe2 d6 6 Nc3 c6(?) 7 d4 g5 is indeed "another main line", but one Black needs to avoid.

Instead, 6...Nc6 is correct, when 7 d4 g5 8 e5 Bg7 is the same line as in the previous post.

Seems I didn't quite get these multitudinous transpositions down.

This would be enough to put me off ever playing the Ponziani.

This is the opposite of what PANFR wrote in 2015.

As usual the truth is somewhere in the middle. For both sides this is a very difficult to play opening. White and black have often to play single moves which makes that the player with the better memory/ analysis often prevails.

Lately I suffered a few defeats online in the line below:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 Nf6 4.d4 Nxe4 5.d5 Bc5 6.dxc6 Bxf2+ 7.Ke2 Bb6 8.Qd5 Nf2 9.Rg1 0-0 10.cxb7 Bxb7 11.Qxb7 Qf6 12.Qd5 c6 13.Qd2 e4 14.Nd4 e3 15.Qc2 Rae8 16.Qf5 which is playable and not discussed in Tony's notes. The optimal play is impossible to find without assistance of a computer and continues with 16... Qd6 (so not Bxd4 winning a piece) 17.Na3 Bxd4 18.Nc4 Qxh2 19.cxd4 g6 (so not grabbing the rook) 20.Qxd7 Nd1 (instead of grabbing the rook, throwing another piece away) 21.Qxc6 Qxg1 (finally) 22.Qf3 Re4 (of course throwing another rook as other moves would be too easy) 23.Nxe3 Nxe3 (still offering the rook) 24.Qxe4 Nxf1 25.Bh6 Qh2 26.Rxf1 Qxh6 which should be an equal endgame or even more funny 25...Ng3+ 26.Kf3 (did I say only move?) Qxa1 27.Kxg3 Qxb2 28.Bxf8 Qb8+ 29.Kh3 and the resulting queen-endgame should be drawn despite the extra pawn for black as the d-pawn is strong.

That is only one branch so just to say that things are not simple for practical play.
