A new book is planned to be released July 1, 2008.

A very interesting book. There is a lot against the french now. Thats great !! And the book has the Tarrasch as its main weapon.

I searched this forum to see any possible earlier post on this book but I didnt find it. Hopfully I have not missed anything.

Editorial Reviews

Book Description

The French Defence is considered to be one of Black’s most reliable answers to 1 e4. Indeed, many players have become frustrated in their attempts to prove an advantage and make headway against Black’s ultra-solid formation.
In How to Beat the French Defence, Andreas Tzermiadianos meets this difficult challenge head on. He advocates his favourite weapon against the French – the Tarrasch Variation – and reveals an abundance of opening ideas and novelties, providing the reader with a complete repertoire which is aimed at posing Black serious problems. Read this book and fight the French Defence with renewed confidence and vitality.

These "Beat..." this and that books come up in great numbers but I never believe them. It's only their authors' personal message. As to the French, it is rather unbeatable than the otherwise.  Wink

His main line is based on a Kotronias-Halkias Game. 90% of the line is sound, but the last part is too superficial (logical though since if a book is going to analyze every line is great detail 10 moves after the Novelty, then the book will never end.

Basically this line (starting with Nd4, gives white a slight, but constant edge. Nothing in the vincinity of winning as in the book, but white has a comfortable edge. (reaching this result after searching the postion with the IDEA tool (found in Aquarium) for more than a week and after finding a lot of little details that both sides need to know. Basically for over the board play, white has easier play and if i have to choose sides, i take white gladly)

Yes, it appears that both 12...f6 (Watson 3) and 12...Ba6 13 Qe3 f6 (McDonald 2008) are playable.

It is worth noting that the move order in this important game was different:

- Kudrin (a great 3 Nd2 expert) played 12 Qe3 instead of 12 Re1. In either case I think Black is OK though. In the game above Black was under some pressure but it is not too hard to find improvements.

I tried to find the book in a local bookshop but it was not there....I don't mind to find out what he gives against 3...Nc6 (Kotronias has played some good games with White here, and i know that Tzermi and Kotronias know very well the analysis of each other) but i wanted to see what he gives against the 3...dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bd7 when after 5.c4 (i know he recomends this line) my coach adviced me to play 5...Nf6!.

Also, i'd like to hear if he has any idea against Watson's "equalising" line 3...Be7 4.Bd3 Nc6! and of course against the line Banikas played against Kotronias as i posted above. This was a very crucial game that would decide the National Champion and Banikas who hasn't French as his main weapon against 1.e4 played with confidence this line and won easily! The thing is that Banikas knows that Kotronias is an expert from the White side and picked this line that was considered bad for Black untill this game! I suppose that he know the line given in this book and had prepared something. Unfortunately i just ordered the book and i have to wait some days before my questions are answered....Can anybody help me?  Smiley

But what about the Game Kotronias - Banikas Rhodes 2008?

1.e4  e6  2.d4  d5  3.Nd2  Be7  4.Bd3  c5  5.dxc5  Nf6  6.Qe2  Nc6  7.Ngf3  Bxc5  8.0-0  Qc7  9.a3  0-0  10.e5  Nd7  11.Nb3 (here Kotronias in his Chess Informant notes gives 11.b4! but i suspect that both players had an improvement in mind here)  Bb6  12.Re1  f6  13.exf6  Nxf6  14.Be3  e5  15.Bxb6  Qxb6  16.Bb5  e4  17.Nfd2  Ng4  18.Rf1  Nce5  19.h3  Nh6  20.c4  a6  21.Ba4  Nf3+  22.Nxf3  exf3  23.Qd3  dxc4  24.Qxc4+  Kh8  25.Qc5  Qf6  26.Nd2  Bxh3  27.Ne4  Qh4  0-1

What does Tzermi gives here? This game was played after the book was out!

This book "How to beat the French defence"is a very nice, well analysed book imo.
Since i have Moskalenko's book, i compard them in the line 3.Nd2 Be7.

Tzermiadianos recommends 4.Bd3!? and so after: 4..c5! 5.dc5 Nf6 6.Qe2 we have  a first road to take.

Since Kristjansson-Caruana, Reykjavik 2008, 0-1 is such a nice game i followed that road in the 2 books.

That game went: 6...0-0 7.Ngf3 a5 8.0-0 Na6 9.e5 Nd7.

Tzermiadianos now recommends 10.c3!? Nac5 11.Bc2 b6!? 12.Re1 Ba6 13.Qe3 f6!? and here Tzermiadianos goes on with 14.ef6! Bf6 15. Nb3!? e5 only briefly saying(14. b4!?)

14.b4!? is the move that Moskalenko says, not mentioning 14.ef6.
14.b4!? is the move played in Kristjansson-Caruana,very instructive how to play against b4.

I think 14.ef6 is the way forward for white in this line (10.c3!?) but i want to improve on 15..e5!?

The game Gara-Rudolf from 2008, 1/2(between two 2300 players) followed:
15...Qe8!? 16.Nc5 Nc5 17.Bd2 Qf7 18.Nd4 and only now e5.

But after the move 19.Nb3 black should have played 19...Bh4! to gain advantage( f.e. 20.g3 Be7 21.Qe5 Qf2 22.Kh1 Qf3 23.Kg1 Rae8)

White can improve and sac his queen for the queenside pawns to storm forward: 19.Qh3 g6 20.Nb3 Bg7 21.Be3 Ne6 22.Qh4 a4!? 23.Qa4 Bd3 24.Qa8 Ra8 25.Bd3 Qb7 26.a4 Nc5!? 27.Nc5! bc5 28.Bc5 but i think this looks promising for white.

Black can improve however with 22...Nf4!?(instead of 22..a4!?)

In this game with 15..Qe8!? i think white can improve with 17.Ng5!? after 17...Bg5 18.Qg5 Bd3 19.Bd1 there is alot of play for both sides.

Overall its a very good book, but still it has its grey areas, for instance he fails to prove a clear advantage against Watson's old 11...Qb6 Line:  1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ne2 cxd4 8.cxd4 f6 9.exf6 Nxf6 10.0-0 Bd6 11.Nf3 Qb6 . Of course there are more dangerous ways to meet this 11...Qb6  line than what Tzermi gives, so Black players dare not rest easy.

My first impression of this book is very favorable. There's so much to study I will probably keep my old, simpler Tarrasch repertoire and gradually add lines from this great book. IMHO the kind of introduction Tzermiadianos gives with typical middlegames and endgames should be mandatory in opening books!

I thought I found a hole in the book: After 3...c5 4.Ngf3 black can play 4...a6 (as Vaganian, M.Gurevich and many other French experts have done). As far as I can see this move order is not mentioned anywhere, and it worried me because against 3...a6 Tzermiadianos wants to play 4.Bd3, not 4.Ngf3!

But in the Psakhis 3.Nd2 book I found:
3...c5 4.Ngf3 a6 5.dxc5 Bxc5 6.Bd3 and we have reached the main line of 3...a6 4.Bd3, see diagram on p. 60 of Tzermiadianos. I think* the Greek author intended this transposition, but forgot to mention it (in chapter 8 would be natural). This is a very small problem of course, but it's good to be aware of it.

I finally found some time to take a deep look at some parts of the book. Here is what i think

1) There is a tremendous amount of work inside the book. It is not a database dump at all, and this feelling is all over the place.
2) To the simple question , are there improvements , mistakes, etc, the answer is simple, "is it possible for a book to be the final word in an opening?". There are plenty of places where black can choose another root, make improvements etc, and ofcourse, there could be improvement in improvements... and so on.
3) This is definatelly a book to stay in your bookself for years, and i would even go as far as comparing it with Watson books for French (for black this time) , which are great resources even years after they were published. I am saying almost, because Watson is really great in introducing new ideas.
4) Although i dont think high of Nd2 variation, not because its not good, but because the handling of some of its positions require really great technique from white's part, so i would not recomment it for anyone below master level, this book can help intermediate and masters

I have read many indifferent books on french, and this is NOT on this list. A great book.

My rating 9/10

Just a quickie.
Have played the French for a good number of years at a reasonablish level, and have a good knowledge of most Tarrasch lines, having jumped around a bit.

This book impressed me. Went further than I knew in all lines I know well and checked, including some of the lesser known ones.

Havent looked for a while, but iirc, didnt notice any obvious omissions.

He has clearly put a lot of work into this. Well worth getting. Credit to the fella - a genuinely good piece of work.

I am interested in this book, so I followed this thread, which I have missed so far:

5 pages of discussions about the general advantages/disadvantages of 3.Nc3, Nd2 and e5.....

2 pages of where and when the book will come out and can be bought.....

1 page of questions regarding reference to the Khalifman book.

Almost zero about the value of the book, the lines etc. if I leave out the valuable information by tracke.

Anyway, today I found a generally favorable review here:

http://www.chesscafe.com/hansen/hansen.htm

What the books recommendation in the 3...Nf6 line, is it the universal system or some Ne2 stuff? Right now I am happy with the universal, but my sources are a bit dated (The Nd2 volume of Psakhis, which doesn´t cover the Rubinstein), so I am interested.

Likewise I would be interested about the lines covered in chapter 10 and 11, so far I don´t see anything really convincing for white.

Which lines are given against the Rubinstein?

How do you like the book in general?

Hi, I laso checked Khalifman's books and did not find where it is. If it is present in should be in Volume 6 and maybe somewhere between pages 46 and 60. Strange but I did not find any simmilar position (even to one mentioned on page 51 in How to Beat The French).

Not in volume 6 (page 45 to 60 are about Rubinstein with a quick dxe4) and in volume 7...dealing all with Nc3 (and not Tarrasch Nd2).
I have not yet recorded 5.Ne5 in the Tarrasch 3..b6 system, while reading books, except Psakhis "French Defence - 3.Nd2" first game of the book, Tischbierek-Hertneck,Altenkirchen 2001 where games deviates after 5...Bb7.Maybe 4...Be7 is better than 4...Nf6  Cool

That was my experience as well. Perhaps editors on the project John Emms or Richard Palliser could clarify matters.
