Grandmaster Repertoire Najdorf sicilian
03/21/09 at 11:01:24

Hi
It seems that Qualitychess will publish a Book in the Grandmaster Repertoire series on the Najdorf be Ftacnik.
Is Ftacnik a Najdorf player himself? Certainly it will be a good book, but it must compare to Georgiev/Kolevs Book the sharpest sicilian which is excellent.
Very intersesting

by Ftacnik?
I am hoping that he will be better away from chessbase as he has been resolutely unimpressive there. Annotation by numbers.
Quality Control at Quality Chess impresses, so I hope that I am mightily suprised.
Seems an odd choice though.

Fantastic news!! Ftacnik indeed plays the Najdorf, often as a way to his favorite Scheveningen.  Hopefully, this book will really be about the Scheveningen (i.e., he'll recommend ..e6 in response to White's various sixth moves) since Ftacnik is one of the leading experts in the world on the Scheveningen.

Great choice of author as he is a leading najdorf and scheveningnen expert. I am hopeful of another classic - I am sure Jacob Aagaard will input in the editing as he has played some of these lines himself for white and for black !

I play the Najdorf on occasion and like the opening. However, it's too popular to play successfully without being VERY prepared and following the database games as well as engine games (CompMaster, My Book, latest Rybka book, etc.). It's just too popular and too theoretical to keep up with if you don't play it very often. This is the first opening every Open Sicilian player prepares against.

Anyway, this book should help. Smiley Although, it faces a tough market and stiff competition so it better be great! The Sharpest Sicilian was released in 2007, Palliser's book just a year before that and so on.

BTW: My references mostly refer to CC but it's also true OTB if you're playing masters.

Further details of the book can be found at the Quality Chess website: http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/products/6/49/grandmaster_repertoire_5__the_sicili....

Does anyone know whether Ftacnik will base his repertoire mostly around 6...e5 or 6...e6? It will be interesting to see what he recommends against 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4, 6.Be3 and 6.Be2, which are currently the critical lines at top level.

I hope it is 6...e6 There are very few good books on the Scheveningen to say that it is such a popular opening.

I agree. For such a popular opening, not much written. You wouldn't happen to be the Najdorfslayer from RHP would you?  Roll Eyes

What I dont like is that this book probably will be a Najdorf with e6 set up.
For me that will always be the Scheveningen. Najdorf is pure -e5 pawn formation...as I view it..... except against 6.Bg5 and 6. Bc4.

All books seem to treat e5 systems as pure Najdorf.

I remember when I and a opponent analysed a Najdorf game (team match in Superettan) where I was white and had played g3 variation. He replied e6 and after the game he wanted to know more about the theory on g3 so I went home and showed him a book and we had to flip into schveningen in order to find more about the positon after e6! (And we discorered improvments for both sides, particelly for white. Our game became a draw, I was a pawn up but had an insecure king agianst a stronger player so we took repetition of moves.)
