What do you know  about this book? Is the setup (d6,e5,f5) recomended by J&T in their explosive repetoire book covered?

Thx

There is a kind of review at The Chess Mind: http://chessmind.powerblogs.com/book_reviews/.

Evidently the world is still waiting for the definitive Sokolsky book.

Concerning An Explosive Chess Opening Repertoire for Black and its anti-Sokolsky line in Chapter 29 B): 1.b4 d6 2.Bb2 e5 3.c4 f5.

The new book, The Sokolsky Opening: 1.b4 in Theory & Practice, deals with the line in detail in Chapter 8. Moreover, the book's annotated illustrative games number 39, 45, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79 and 80 start with those moves (or reach the position).

It sounds really interesting because IMHO this is the Sokolsky's "refutation", if ever it exists. I can't find any tangible advantage in this line.

The Sokolsky's refutation exists, and it is 1...e5 =+.  Well, that is perhaps slightly exaggerated, but not much.

Of course there is no refutation. Shocked

1... e5 is (in my opinion) blacks best choise. But you won´t get more than equality. Cool

Oh that's really comforting ! So Black does not obtain more than equality ...

Then, why play the Sokolsky ?

To prove that White can equalize with 1.b4.

Oh I see, from an academical viewpoint...

I never doubted the viability of the Sokolsky; there's plenty of theory with this 'b4/b5'-strategy thrown in. Had just hoped there would something more in it.

If there was we would see 1.b4 more often on toplevel, don't you think? I am not at all against playing stuff like 1.b4 and 1.f4 on amateur level. I mean, I have had great fun with the Danish Gambit and the Morra Gambit. It is just silly to suggest that such openings fall in the same category as the Ruy Lopez.

Exactly. 1.b4 and 1.f4 for example are both openings with equal play.

1.e4 or 1.d4 seem slightly better for white.

To be more precise : the Xanov variation of the Yanitch line seems to offer better prospects after White's move 25. Befote that tehre is plenty of sidelines that are given an = evaluation, and two years from now this better prospects point will heve shifted to move 31.

I've written it before : from an economical point of view this is sheer madness. A man that starts digging in a square meter of farmland stands a better chance of finding something worth the trouble than a chess player delving into a so called better line.

Hi people,

before deciding if i should get this book. I would like to know if this line is included in its analysis (from a white's point of view of course):

1.b4 e5 2.Bb2 Bxb4 3.Bxe5 Nf6 4.c4 Nc6 5.Bb2 0-0 6.e3 d5 7.cd Qxd5!? (my evaluation) 8.Bxf6?! (my evaluation after yesterday's game) gf

I shoud be almost lost here

In that game, played yesterday, I continued with 9.Ne2 Bf5 10.Nc3 Qa5 11.Qb3 Rfe8 12.a3 Rad8 13.Qb2 Bxc3 Qxc3 and finally, after a bit of swindelling white, me, won the game.

The line does happen to get a (very short) mention in the book (in the notes to Game 89), though there are better reasons for buying the book than that.
