Marin wins Pub's Book of Year 2009!
11/11/09 at 18:59:15
Hi all
As Chesspublishing.com is the premium site for opening theory and many of us like to discuss and buy chess books and especially books on opening I wonder if we should not make a "Chesspublishing opening chess book of the year " award (If Tony agrees). We could first collect some suggestionts and then make a poll.
What do you think?

Good idea.
To get things rolling, I'll nominate Schandorff's Playing the Queens Gambit.

What is the year? And maybe somebody should make a list of all the books that have been newly published in it. If I'm not mistaken, Schandorff's excellent book is more than a year old.

Going purely by copyright date, Schandorff's book is 2009. Avrukh's is 2008.
It would probably be easiest if the people nominating the books would include copyright and publisher info for all of us. This thread can act as the clearinghouse for nominees.
When we get several good candidates I'll make a poll question for us to vote on. It'd be nice to close the initial candidate search by Saint Andrew's Day. (for the non-Scots, that's 11/30 or 30.11, depending on your mood.)

This question is fairly easy to answer. The opening book of the year was the one published on January 1, 2009.
Jokes aside, I will nominate Grandmaster Repertoire: 1.c4 Volume 1 by Marin, with Dismantling the Sicilian by De La Villa as a second nomination.

I'm not sure at all but I think I have the castillan version of "dismantling the sicilian" three years ago.
I'm really surprised by the the book of Hellsten "Play the Sicilian Kan".

Dismantling the Sicilian by De La Villa for sure but since it already is mentioned I nominate "Win with the Stonewall Dutch".

To be fair to any books published in December, shouldn't the poll be in February 2010, to allow for shipping and reading? Or allow nominations Nov 2008-Nov 2009 or even further back. A copyright date doesn't say when the book became available to buyers. I'd expect a delay of at least 2-3 months from copyright date or Foreword date to the actual publication date...
And for Dismantling the Sicilian - if it's a translation of a three year year old book, would it really qualify even if updated?
Anyway, it's nice to see only opening books nominated - as usually these kind of awards never go to opening books.

While the opening under discussion may be boring to some, Greet's Play the Queen's Indian to me is an exemplary example of how a repetoire book should be written in terms of a good mix of explanations, variations, new ideas and attention to recent developments (I am not sure whether I see much of a difference between variations or complete games, where for once it's the former again).

As I expressed in another threat, I think the mentioned book is a very poor effort indeed.
I just received Marin's book and like it a lot, compared to his other writings it's really a leap forward.

I can honestly say that
Win with the Stonewall Dutch
is the best opening book I have purchased this year...although, to be honest, I have only purchased one other.
