Then it turns into the Gurgenidze variation of the CaroKann and/or Modern, which is theoretically OK but a bit hard in practice.
But I used to play this, and still like to play it once in a while.

All the deep analysis provided in this thread suggests that 1...Nh6 is more of a psychological statement about white's first move than something that warrants extensive analysis as an objective refutation of 1.f4

Presumably the point is to try and get it to f5 instead? So 2 e4 d5 etc.

Really?? I'm having a hard time believing that this is worth the trouble. What comes next and does it matter? Sure: 1.f4 isn't so critical that Black can afford to give a tempo or two, but this really doesn't seem terribly productive. I can imagine scenarios (after, say, 2.e4) where Black's knight makes its way to g4, only to get kicked back to f6. Seems like a waste of time to me. If you're looking for something offbeat, why not try 1...b6 or 1...d6?

I play this myself, and I'm a Bird player.
Not that it is that difficult to equalise against 1. f4  Sad
, but I like the fact that it can go anywhere -depending on white's reaction, of course- from a From (improved) to the classical anti-dutch. (Somehow this  helps against the known psychological problem of facing your own repertoire.)

If you need some literature : there is a piece form GM Reinderman in Secrets of Opening Surprises (titled Edgy Knight iirc).
