cathexis - Thanks for sharing the video. Initially, it's amusing to see Gemini "chicken out". Further reflection brings the realization (as noted in a number of comments) that this example shows the limitation of using a Large Language Model AI in an area where its training is inadequate.

I believe a few comments mentioned hallucinations, which reminded me of an October 2025 interview of ChessBase's Matthias Wüllenweber, where he says AI "struggles with the chess middlegame due to its hallucinations. Chess is simply too complex."

https://en.chessbase.com/post/in-chess-ai-fails-due-to-its-hallucinations-an-interview-with-matthias-wuellenweber

Imagine my surprise when, a few weeks later, the latest version of his company's flagship product, ChessBase 26, is announced to have an AI feature that will take a middlegame position and suggest a plan. In describing the features of ChessBase 26 in a November interview, Wüllenweber presented the AI feature in a tone of voice that suggested to me that it was added partly for entertainment value. In the example he showed, the AI did present a reasonable-looking plan, although at one of point Wüllenweber warned about the possibility of hallucinations.

https://en.chessbase.com/post/matthias-wuellenweber-on-all-new-functions-for-chessbase-26

Happy New Year! There's usually an opening book or two that I look forward to, but unfortunately that's not the case for 2024. However, a few biographies of note are forthcoming: a new Morphy bio from New in Chess, a Soltis autobiography, and a massive two-volume work on Lasker. These last two titles are to be published by McFarland.

1) You don't want your kids to choke on swallowed pieces. Quite risky before 5-6 years.
2) There are countless examples of little prodigies (6-10 yr) overpressed beyond repair by their parents. Some became titled players (IM/GM), but is it worth it?
3) Prophylaxis is a part of chess where "the most important thing is not to be happy, but to make the other player unhappy". I wouldn't want to pass this kind of mindset to a young child
4) young players (10+) can learn very fast with the internet, see the rising 2600+ kids. By common knowledge, it takes ~10,000 hours to make a GM. You'd be surprised to see how easily kids achieve such elapsed time in their favorite games (say, Fortnite). [Also, if they spent such time with math, they would all have PhD at 14]
In a letter to the editor in the latest issue of New in Chess magazine, Dr. Frank Brady, who wrote Profile of a Prodigy and Endgame, states that the graphic novel fails to show the complexity of Fischer's life. The editor agrees, but he and Brady don't mention that the graphic novel could be targeted to those who have interest in Fischer while not being inclined to plow into a prose biography of several hundred pages, such as those written by Brady.

Hey folks!

This is just a head's up - NOT a sales attempt. Thechessworld site is having a huge sale on Chesslecture.com vids. Vol. 1-182 as downloads for $97 US. So, less than .50 cents per title. I checked the details on a few titles and I would guess most titles are perhaps 7 - 10 years old. They advertise it as complete, but I think that is actually what THEY have, as there is a lot of product from chesslecture.com. So, FWIW. I will try to cut n paste in the whole title list here:

ChessLecture Mega Bundle [1-180]
Title of the video:
50 Years of Tal-Botvinnik 4 DVD Set
A Complete System for Black Against the English Opening
A Modern Take On Nimzowitsch
A Pawn is Worth Three Tempi
A Poisonous System Against the KID Fianchetto
A Secret Weapon for Black 2 DVD set
A Simple System Against the King's Gambit;
Sorry to hear that. For sure "Sound" was his middlename, much more so than Ulfie. Reading the blurb, I would have shortlisted Lakwadala and the actual author, both quite prolific. Also the guy from NIC Yearbook and his trademark "In part A, we examined various alternatives leading to a pleasant edge for White. In part B, we'll explore typical moves and plans" and then "The critical positions reached in part C await further tests and developments".
I was thinking of ways we could keep re-using deals and offers, but unfortunately some require a phone number and we can't keep re-using a phone number, so I did some research and it turns out you can use an SMS Verification website
Turns out these actually work! So that is one extra way you can keep re-using good offers that require a phone number
