Catalan from English Move Order
John-Paul Wallace in hs excellent survey on the Catalan recommends after 1,d4d5 2,c4 e6 3,Nf3 Nf6 4,g3 dxc4 which does indeed look like a good try for early middlegame complications. But I wonder what...

The Catalan?
What is the status of the Catalan? Quite often I see it called drawish and boring. In Chessbase's description of the Marin CD they start "The Catalan is an opening in which Black may well be able to o...

Symmetrical Variation, Pseudo-Catalan
1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3
Are there many resources on this line? If so, would you share? I like delaying c4, as I'm a softy. My database gives it decent results. Started 07/23/15 at 03:11:02 by Ama17 |

Anyone writing "Play the Catalan" ?
So is anyone writing this. It would seem that with Kramnik's recent exploits at the top, that there would be a market for a good well written repertoire book for White based on the Catalan.

Closed Catalan (E08) theory
GM Scherbakov did an excellent review of the state of Catalan theory as of 6/4/13. In the section "Catalan5" (E08), he discusses the important line

Bf5 against g3-systems
Hi all,
I often meet the following variation : 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 c6 4.Bg2 Bf5 5.0-0 e6 6.c4 and black continues developing (Nbd7/Bd6/0-0) with sometimes h6. Apart from being dull i... Started 02/09/07 at 11:46:40 by Cruyce |

Catalan vs. the Semi-slav and Noteboom
It seems the Catalan approach would be an excellent short cut for those who wish to play classically (Nc3 and Nf3) vs. the Slav and QGD, but who wish to avoid heavy Semi-slav theory or the Noteboom. ...
