English v Gruenfeld
Any thoughts on the line 1. c4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. e4 Nxc3 ? Playing 6. bxc3 is likely to lead to a Gruenfeld, but what of 6. dxc3?

What to play against 1. c4 for Grünfeld players
If 1. c4, then is it best for Grünfeld players to continue into the Anti-Grünfeld line with 1. c4 Nf6 2. g3 g6 3. Nc3 d5 or play something else, and what else would it be? If Symmetrical, then what if...

Grunfeld versus c4 or nf3
I would really like to play grunfeld, however what happens if white starts with 1c4 or Nf3 it seems harder to get back into a decent grunfeld type structure for black, have you any ideas about any mov...

Interesting Computer Moves in English
A few days ago, one of my computers employed the following variation:

Dynamic English vs. Dutch Leningrad
Hi everyone,
in his "Dynamic English" Tony Kosten advocates the following line against the Dutch Leningrad (chapter 12, page 121): 1.c4 f5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.d3 0-0 6.e4 d6 7.Nge2... Started 01/29/07 at 02:10:14 by Mettwurst Lothar |

4.g4 in the Anti-Nimzo-Indian (Is Black better?)
I open my games as White with 1.Nf3 (usually, though occasionally something else), and against attempts at a Nimzo-Indian, I play 1...Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3. I've been looking at 4.g4 against 3...Bb4, but...

The English - Dealing with 1...Nf6
Hello all,
How do you Flankers deal with 1...Nf6? I'd like to go with 2. g3, since 2. Nc3 e5 or 2...c6 would lead me outside my normal English repertoire. But then what? Do you guys transpose to... Started 10/30/09 at 19:14:53 by TonyRo |

Topalov's novelty in Anti-Gruenfeld
I am referring to the now famous: 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. Qc2N. What I don't understand is how Topalov's move compares with the old 5. Qb3 which on the surface seems even better:...

English Defence vs. 1.c4 move order
I find 1...b6 rather irritating as a response to 1.c4. Tony K's suggestion fo adopting a Botvinnik type set-up does not wholly satisfy me - and King is scathing about it in his book on the English De...

Mikenas Attack w/ c5 (4.e5!? vs 4.Nf3!?)
While the mainline is 4.e5!? Ng8 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.c4 cxd4 7.Nxd4 Nxe5 8.Ndb5 a6 9.Nd6+ Bxd6 10.Qxd6, I see quite a few players are choosing 4.Nf3!? Nc6 Be2.
