Thanks for the analysis Dom. Smiley

After 8.Bd3 I think the game should go something like:
8...Nc6 9.dxc5 Bxc5 10.0-0 f6 11.b4 axb3 12.exf6 Nxf6 13.Nxb3 Bd6 with equality (in my opinion). The position has a number of similarities with the Qb6 line in the Closed Tarrasch variation as proposed by Watson.

I think black is fine in this line. Grin

Thank you for your game, IanE11..
What do you think about 8.Bd3 (instead of 8.b4) ?
If 8...Nc6 9.dxc5 (no more problem with d4 pawn)
If 8...cxd4 9.Nxd4 (blocus on d4 square)
If 8..c4 9.Bc2 (use bishop in long diagonal b1-h7 and threats a4; White will play f4-f5 rather than b3/b4 in the future)
If 8...Bb5 9.c4 (open center).

I have played a game in a weekend congress in England that involved the following moves:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Qb6 5.Nf3 Bd7 6.a3 a5 7.Nbd2 a4 8.b4 axb3 9.Qxb3 Qxb3 10.Nxb3 c4 11.Nbd2 Nc6 and I am no expert but I would much rather be black.

As for comments about white transposing to the Millner-Barry Gambit, black should not fear this. Klick is right as there are no problems transposing to standard lines if you want, I think an early Qb6 gives more options.

As a long time French player, I don`t feel that I am experiencing many problems in the french advance. At least I am not afraid of it anymore. The early queen-development to b6 is also my choice (avoiding Be3, even though I don`t think it is dangerous), and then going Nc6 into the standard lines.

I don`t consider the Milner-Barry to be a good choice for white. My experience is that a3 might be the best choice for white, but I think black can hold this without too much trouble after an early Nf5 and f6.

Any opinions on the line that Mcdonald is giving as a possible "refutation" of the Milner-Barry? I`ve been close to sweeping the board  Grin with it when playing on the net.

Hello and welcome on the forum...
Yes, a5!? seems a move currently in favour among some strong players, but perhaps a little more in classical variation (Nf6-e5-Nd7).
It has some advantages as stopping b4 for a while.
But, perhaps, White can transpose to various positions where a5 is useless, like gambit Millner-Barry or mixed Tarrasch-Advance.
For gambit MillnerBarry move order for White (Bd3), Black can play Bb5 leading to position of Wade variation with a3/a5, thus I will not be afraid about this as Black.
But mixed Tarrasch-Advance strategy beginning with Nd2 can be much more complex, or simply transpose since White can play Bd3 on next move or c4 to counter Bb5. With Nd2, White can play b3 in reply to c4, to open queenside wing, since a5 has lost one tempo on main variation (Na5 to control b3 in place of a5).
I would like to add that some analysis give now advice about NOT setting black queen in b6 in variation 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bd7 6.a3 c4 (b6 square is free for a knight and b5 is playable too).

Are there any views on 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Qb6. I have played this a few times as black with good results but I think that is often due to weak play by my opponents.
I have had particular success after 5.Nf3 Bd7 6.a3 and then 6...a5!?
