Or does white has to look for an advantage with 5.a3! ?

Why not? The stem-game Botwinnik-Capablanca AVRO 1938 is one of the most famous games of all time. The white strategy is still tough to counter even 70 years later, just check out the latest win (position reached by transposition) by Aleksandrov over Lugovoi in the Aeroflot Open 2003.

I think White is fine after 4...d5 5.Nge2 dxc4 just because they can still use delayed a3 getting the pawn back and cramping Black in the following line:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 d5 5.Nge2 dxc4 6.a3 Ba5 7.Qa4+ Nc6 8.Qxc4 0-0 9.b4 Bb6 10.Na4 However, Black still has a solid position anyhow.

I think the most important fear for white after 4...d5 5.Nge2 is that Black can ignore 5...dxc4 for now and simply play 5...0-0 as in the following:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 d5 5.Nge2 0-0 6.Nf4 c6 7.Bd2 dxc4 8.Bxc4 Nbd7 where Black is pretty much equal if not better.

Any thoughts about the above mentioned lines?
