Why not 1.e4 c5 2.c3 Nc6 3.d4 cd 4.cd d5 immediately?

When I was looking at playing this for black I felt that 3.Nf3 may be best where black can transpose to a dodgy 2...d5 variation where the Nc6 is premature.

The idea of d5 is interesting. In the main line with 5 e5 you have transposed to a decent Advanced French where Black has prematurely exchanged pawns on d4. The only snag is that you might not play the Advanced French.

Alumbrado's suggestion looks ok.  Sort of a franco benoni position with cpawns exchanged.  Black's pieces will come out pretty quickly but maybe you can generate some play on the cfile.  I don't see a good place for the c8 bishop either.

Another thing to note is that if you transpose to the French advance black has already played cxd4 cxd4 which should favor white in some lines.

It seems to me that 2...Nc6 is an inaccurate move order for black if he wants to invite transpositions to the French (which is what you have ended up with there).  In the line you give, White could certainly consider 5.d5!? gaining space and time by kicking the knight around.  5...Ne5 6.Nf3 Nxf3+ 7.Qxf3 looks at least += to me.

If sometimes we fly too close to the sun, at least this shows we are spreading our wings.
