I flew back from Graz with Peter last Monday (the ever-so-cheap Ryanair flight, of course), and he told me that he thought it was his best book ever, and that he had received rave reviews! Smiley
He even said that he might be interested in writing for ChessPublishing.com some time!  Wink

Well, it gives good analysis on the critical lines.  After carefully studying the lines in book, you could easily play against the Trompowski as black after a quick review of 3.Bh4 and 3.h4.  No problems there!

Anyway, often a good way to learn how to "beat" an opening is simply to learn about the opening.

no it doesn't show how to beat the tromp, it goes into a lot of detail and if you want to play the tromp now you need to know a fair amount of detail and *gasp* theory. a lot of people got into the tromp to avoid that, so it's not going to make them happy. on the other hand people who want a 'real' opening that allows you to dictate the terms of the game will still be intersested in the tromp.

"...probably decide not to play it".  Do you mean the book shows how Black can handle the opening and everyone will know this now?

This is a great book!  This is such a good book about the Trompowski that after reading it, you'll probably decide not to play it!  And believe me, that's not an easy decision to make, considering its many practical benefits.  As a friend of mine (who relies heavily on the Trompowski) said, "Great.  Now everyone will know how to play the Trompowski!"

I also just purchased this book, and haven't had time to do more than skim it, but it looks really good.  Wells seems to go into some critical positions very deeply, and there also appears to be a good deal of original analysis and recommendations.

There is a very favourable review of the book by Glenn Flear in the latest New in Chess Yearbook (#68).  I don't have it in front of me at the moment but if memory serves he says "it is the sort of book that will be talked about for many years to come".

Sorry, I pressed some key that truncate the message before...
   I was saying...
Peter Wells covers extensivelly 2. ... Ne4 and 2. ... d5 dedicating the same chapters to an attacking repetoire and the same to a solid one. In the last chapter covers minor lines playable after 1.d4, Nf6 2.Bg5, ...

What I like is the fact  that every line is explained with the aid of whole games payed at high level, very full of detailed analisys, alway trying to penetrate the thoughts of the players.

   Really well done!

For what it is worth (usually quite a lot in my view) Carsten Hansen makes a passing reference to the Wells book in his latest piece on the Chess Café website http://www.chesscafe.com/hansen/hansen.htm
He calls it "a truly phenomenal book" - and says he will review it in full soon.

I just purchased this book. It seems to be big on explanations with lots of text. I like that. I believe Wells promoted the idea of getting "Secrets of the Trompowsky" by GM Hebden (I think it was Hebden) and a few other titles that went into more detail in the trickier lines. Hope this helps.

no, it covers 2...d5, which some psuedo tromps transpose to, but it doesn't cover them directly.
