Ughhh!  What is 2...h6 about?  ...h6 this early in the opening looks like a disaster waiting to happen!

Seriously, I don't see any good ideas behind this move.

Actually, Stefan Buecker (sp?) once suggested 2...h6. The idea is that after 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5 Black can get a Sveshnikov/Lowenthal type of position without allowing White's Bg5 or Nxc6. Graham Burgess discusses it briefly in his "101 Chess Opening Surprises".

The problem is that, if White doesn't play an Open Sicilian and just continues with something like 3.Nc3 or 3.c3, ...h6 can very well turn out to be a wasted tempo.

Looks good to me.  In fact, I think it's the best continuation after 5...h6?!.  It seems doubtful that black can waste time like this.  After 6. Nxc6 bxc6 7. e5, ...h6 just seems to be weakening.

I actually found a game that reached this position:

[Event "IECC"]
[Site "IECC email"]
[Date "1997.??.??"]
[Round "0"]
[White "Weiner,Ken"]
[Black "Popp,Tony"]
[Result "1-0"]
[Eco "B27"]
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 h6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Nf6 6.Nxc6 bxc6 7.e5 Nh7 8.f4 e6
9.Qg4 g6 10.Bd3 h5 11.Qg3 h4 12.Qg4 Be7 13.Bxg6 fxg6 14.Qxg6+ Kf8 15.f5 Bf6 16.fxe6 dxe6
17.Bh6+ Ke7 18.exf6+  1-0

Ughhh!  What is 2...h6 about?  ...h6 this early in the opening looks like a disaster waiting to happen!

Seriously, I don't see any good ideas behind this move.

Why not just play 6.Nxc6 and if 6...bxc6 7.e5?  ???

Hmm ... it certainly does prevent Bg5, and it also has its points aginst an English Attack, where Black often plays ...h6 to slow down White's kingside pawn storm.  But is it worth spending a whole tempo and weakening the kingside? I doubt it.

White can play a Sozin-Velimirovic type set up with Bc4, when ...h6 looks worse than a wasted move, as after any potential piece sac on e6, the g6 square is weakened.  Alternatively, he can just play 6.f4 when it is hard to see what black has achieved with ...h6.  And simple development with Be2, 0-0, Be3 also looks good.

1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 c5d4 4 Nd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 h6
5...h6 is a new move which prevents
the Bg5 which is seen in the Sveshnikov and
Richter-Rauser.  Black's system could include ...d6
and ...e5.
