A lot depends on your level. I would say that up to about 2000 level you can get away with just general ideas without knowing concrete lines, but over that level it becomes riskier, particularly in such a tactical variation as the Dragon. Even so, the percentage of games decided in the opening is pretty low.

The KID is safer to play on general principles because there are fewer lines where one thematic move is OK, but another loses on the spot.

thx AmateurDragoneer!
but, it's not that I am afraid of theory, it's just that as I also start playing the KID, I was wondering whether I could play the dragon without too much knowledge at first (well, I know a little, and I know some tactical and strategic themes at least...), without getting busted everytime!
Anyway what do you think of the lines that are supposed to be troublesome for black???? (like the one in Defirmian-Ernst I think...)

While there can be no doubt that the Dragon (or any opening, especially Sicilian) requires the black player to know a good deal of theory. However, Ward's point is that some variations of the dragon, especially specific lines of the Yugoslav Attack, can be somewhat stereotyped such that certain maneuvers (ie Rxc3 or Ne5-c4) suggest themselves.

Hi everyone!

As a potential new dragoneer (well, I used to play the Dragon, when I was a child, it was even the first opening I learned vs e4...I know it was not  great idee...but, dude...I loved the name at that time!!!),I wonder if Ward's statement that the Drgaon is not that theoretical (I don't remember where I saw this, I think it was in WWTD2) is really accurate. Moreover, when I looked in the different posts I saw that the Dragon seems to experience a kind of crisis...what do experts dragoneers think??? ???

Thanks Smiley
