One more point, after the plausible continuation with Nf3 and e3 etc. Both ...Bxc3 (when challenged) with ...Ne4 to follow or ...Be7 with ...d5 and ...c5 are reasonable as B on d2 doesn't create threats.

Dear Chessfriend,

This isn't really the right forum for Nimzo questions!

However Bd2 doesn't challenge Black's system very aggressively so any sensible plan that doesn't neglect the centre seems reasonable.

4...b6 5 f3 Bxc3 6 Bxc3 d5 is OK.

If 5 e4!? Bxc3 6 Bxc3 Nxe4 7 Qg4 then Zvjagincev suggests 7...Bb7 8 Qxg7 Rf8 with complications.

Even 4...d5 with a QGD set-up where the bishop is limp on d2 is solid enough

Yes, sorry I did post this in the wrong section, but in any case the question was not answered.  (Besides that "Nimzo" is ambiguous...e4 Nc6.)  If anything, I am only more confused.

I looked up the position in Starting Out: The Nimzo-Indian, and GM Ward's recommendation I could not disagree with more.  All he gave was 4. ... O-O 5.a3? Bxc3 6.Bxc3 Ne4 -+.

Please give help and ignore that it's in the wrong section,

There has already been a post about this topic entitled "4Bd2" in the Nimzo and Benoni forum.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Bd2

This line has come up more than a few times when I've had black.  As far as I can tell, black's best either lies in c5 or d5, I'm not sure of which.  However, b6 also may be an interesting try.  (4. ... b6 5.e4? Bxc3)

Shocked
Kind of confusing for idiots like myself...

Also, one more thing in this variation...assuming everything develops normally, say along the lines of 4. ... b6 5.Nf3 Bb7 6.e3 O-O, should black trade the bishop for the knight supposing a3 at some point?  Or perhaps the standard QID retreat Be7 is better?
