I refer to New In Chess yearbook 48, where Dale Kirton convincingly refutes the Gothenburg Variation.

I would much like to see the analysis... or what the name of the analysis would be under because I can't seem to find it anywhere. To me the gothenburg is risky but playable but if it is busted then I would sure love to know.

I'm well aware that white can force a draw...and that fact does not refute the variation, it makes it much better for black!

That's why I said white should give up the 6. Bg5 lines if the best he has is a draw!  With white one should be looking to win, not draw!  If white was forced into a draw, this line would be an easy end to a tournament when a player has a big lead!

A refuted variation is one in which black would lose!  White cannot force a win here to the best of my knowledge!  A forced draw does not refute it...

I hate to spoil the party, but as far as theory stands The Gothenburg Variation is refuted!

In his 1995 book on the subject, John Nunn comented that the only problem with the line was that White could force a draw!  Since then however Gligoric published an article where he analysed the game against Fischer and published the critical deviation and line.

I would type it all out here, but it extends to move 39!

This is of course the reality, but as regards practical play you can draw your own conclusions!

Well I didn't check the variation you give on board but only as I read it and I believe that your talk about the famous answer 13..Rh7! and not (!! as it does not win the game) first played by Bobby Fiscer against Gligoric. It is very famous and deeply analysed. This game ended in a draw by mutual agreement. I assure you that if you play against serious opponent he will know that sacrifice and most of its variations. It's not a coincidence that when it was first played by 3 Argentine players at the same time on a tournament all 3 Russians opponents found on board and replied with that sacrifice. As I remember somewhere I had seen an analyse about 11.Bg3 giving that white is better but I cannot recall that now.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Be7 8.Qf3 h6 9.Bh4 g5!?

Me and a couple others just spent about an hour analyzing this variation...using our minds, databases, computers, webpages, etc.

Unfortunately, our conclusion is that black is much better here (unless white can find that hidden perpetual check...not much to look forward to though).

What does everyone else think?

After 10.fxg5 Nfd7 11.Nxe6 fxe6 12.Qh5+ Kf8 13.Bb5 (Bc4 we analyzed almost down to lost for white) Rh7!! it would appear white should abandon the Bg5 lines altogether!  (13. ... Ne5 is also bad, 14.Bg3!)  The best he attains is a perpetual, although he must navigate his way to it through the forest!

http://www.auschess.org.au/columns/various/gothenburg.htm

Ach...such a complicated position!

Help!!!
