I think Gallagher sums it up pretty well, he writes (after the further moves 15...Nf5 16.Bf2), "This is a typical position for the variation.  Black will pick up the pawn on f7 but White will retain the slightly better chances because he has a safer king (he will castle kingside). However, the position is strategically quite complex and can lead to quite a dour struggle.  This gives the stronger player a good chance to outplay his opponent with either colour."  I personally would rather avoid the draw by playing a different variation.

I have been taking a fresh look at the main line of the Austrian with 5...c5.  In particular, after 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4 Bg7 5.Nf3 c5 6.Bb5+ Bd7 7.e5 Ng4 8.e6, I have been revisiting the line with 8...Bxb5!? [avoiding the possibility that White will force a draw with 8...fxe6(!) 9.Ng5 Bxb5 10.Nxe6 Bxd4 11.Nxd8 Bf2+ 12.Kd2 Be3+ etc.  Angry ].

To be honest this has never really appealed, as after 9.exf7+ Kd7 10.Nxb5 Qa5+ 11.Nc3 cxd4 12.Nxd4 h5 13. h3 Nc6 14.Nde2 Nh6 15.Be3 it just seems to me that Black's king looks rather vulnerable  Undecided

But am I just being squeamish?  There doesn't appear to be anything immediately wrong with the black position, he can round up the f-pawn easily enough and then maybe walk his king over to the queenside if he starts to feel uncomfortable in the middle.  ???

Does anybody have any experience of this line - with either colour?

Grateful for any views!
