I'm surprised no one mentioned that Black can play 4...g6. It's probably better for White, based on Hou Yifan-Vallejo.

Theoretically there's nothing wrong with 4...Qc7, but after 5.0-0 Nd4 6.Re1 a6 7.Bc4 Ng4 8.e5 Nf3 9.Qf3 Ne5 10.Qf4 White has promising compensation for the pawn.

I don't know but Li Chao-Muzychuk made 8.Bxf7+ look really dangerous for Black.  See Vigorito's annotations if you're a subscriber to the Anti-Sicilians section.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not a subscriber at the moment, but I'm thinking of getting a subscription sometime in the next month.  Wink

For a lot of analysis on this variation which which shows how Black can maintain equality with accurate play (against 8.Ne4 too), go to http://www.chessib.com/nove1.html

Actually, while this variation is really interesing, Palliser shows a refutation in his The Bb5 Sicilian book.  In the articles line (3) after 7...f6 8.Qf3 Nb4 9.exf6 exf6, White should play 10.c3!.  If Black tries 10...Nc6, then 11.Qh5+ g6 12.Qe2+ is better for White. If 10...Nc2+, then 11.Kd1 is winning for White.

Does the position after 4...Qc7 5.0-0 Nd4 6.Re1 a6 7.Bf1 Ng4 8.g3 Nf3 9.Qf3 Ne5 offer White any advantage? Black's position is very flexible, although White's extra space following Q-moves and a later f4 could count for something.

Note that Shaw discusses this line a little bit in this month's update.

In "Fighting the Anti-Sicilians", Richard Palliser mentions that his preferred defence to 3.Nc3 is 3...Nf6 4.Bb5(!) Qc7. I have tried it and can say that it is not a very good practical choice. It probably isn't any worse than 3...e5, but at least you don't risk getting mauled in any of the 3...e5 variations.

I've been told that bb5 is an advantage for white because it is a greatly improved bb5 sicillian because the night doesnt belong on nf6.

2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5!?

I've been smashed by a Grandmaster in a simul...

1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bb5 Nd4 5 e5 Nxb5 6 Nxb5 Nd5 7 Ng5 f6 8 Ne4!

I remembered reading about this line before, up until f6.  But Ne4 came as a shocker here.  What does everyone think?  I am of the opinion that it is far better than chesspublishing's recommended exf6.  I may be a little biased because I was beaten so badly in the opening (I survived, but probably only because it was a simul...), even though I did not defend too well.
