I agree with Glenn. After his line
12.         Bc2
13. Ba5   BxQ
14. BxQ   Rc8
There is now a threat of Bxa2 because of Kd7 winning pinned Bc7 so Ba5 is best.
After that Black has a simple plan of playing f6 a la French, to widen play for those 2 Bishops. And I think he is substantially better then.
I would love to see an answer for this cos it is a cornerstone of what is otherwise an excellent book.
Any ideas?

Well, when we seemed at an impasse I emailed Richard to ask for help.  It was extremely gracious of him to post to the forum.  I've already told Richard that I plan to buy his next book as long as it isn't on the Orangutan opening -- as I never1b4!  Grin

Thanks for the reply!  I was rather surprised to see the author of the book answering my question.  Now that's good value!  Thanks also to "Never1b4" for initially suggesting the Ba5 move.  I tend to rely too much on my computer's evaluations, perhaps because I'm not that great in "simple positions".

I too am quite pleased with the book.  Have been practicing the variations on ICC.  (Never knew the Bogo-Indian was so popular.)  Like the complete coverage!

Straight from the horse's mouth  Smiley

Welcome to the forum, Richard.  I for one really enjoyed your Play 1.d4! so I hope it is selling well for you (but not too well, as I don't want everyone to know the lines!)

11...Nxe5 is certainly an improvement for Black on Palliser-J.Houksa, 4NCL 2003. Burgess doesn't cover this as 8...Nbd7!? is very rare, whilst it's also worth noting that his fine and thorough book also underestimates the strength of Hebden's 8...Nc6 9 0-0! in the main line. Perhaps Black can equalise but in practice White scores well as the Black light-squared B lacks a good role.
Certainly I was concerned that Jovanka might play 11...Nxe5 when I intended 12 dxe5 Bc2! 13 Ba5 (and not 13 Rc1? Rc8) 13...Bxb3 14 Bxc7 Bxc4 15 Rc1 Rc8 16 Ba5. The light-squared B is perhaps more in the game than usual, but I'd still take White here, with Nd2-f3 and then maybe d4 or Rc2 and Rac1 followed by b3 on the cards. White just seems to have an easier position to play as is typical of the whole line.

After 12...Bc2 13.Ba5 Bxb3 14.Bxc7 Rc8 and Black looks at least equal to me (2 Bishops).  I wonder if White should just settle for 8.Nc3 which is objectively equal and while White is giving up on the Bb4 idea it's not completely drawn yet.

I agree that the lines Palliser recommends against the Slav are probably only equal.  Still, maybe White can keep a bit of pressure in the line you give by playing (after 12...Bc2):

13. Ba5 trying to grab the QB file.  Play might go

13. Ba5 Qc6
14. Qb6 and at least Black as to be careful not to
allow a pin or give up the file.  Certainly White has no worries.

Whaddyathink?

In "Play 1.d4!" Palliser gives, "1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5 5.cxd5 exd5 6.Qb3 Qc7 7.Bd2 e6 8.Bb5+ Nbd7!? 9.O-O a6! 10. Bxd7+ Nxd7 11.Ne5!".  Palliser's game continued with 11...Rc8, but I don't understand why Black doesn't insert 11...Nxe5 12.dxe5, when among other ideas Black has 12...Bc2 which seems = for Black.  White can insert Rfc1 at a couple of points but Black seems to be able to safely answer that by ...Qb6.  I looked in G.Burgess' "the Slav', but he doesn't cover 8...Nbd7.  Anyone have any ideas here?
